There are two champions a year and the bottom two clubs are relegated based on average points over the last three seasons.
The clubs finishing in the 3rd and 4th to last places compete in a playoff against the 3rd and 4th place clubs of the Primera B Nacional (second division.) The winners are promoted or remain in the Primera División and the losers are relegated or remain in the Primera B Nacional.
