History: The club was originally formed in 1890 in Smyrna (modern day Izmir) on the Ionian Sea. Following the expulsion of Greeks in the early 1920's after the Greek-Turkish war and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire (i.e. the Asia Minor Catastrophe), the club was reformed in Nea Smyrni, a suburb of Athens.
