FAM had announced the 2002 football ranking and most notably Club Valencia snatched the number one team title for the second consecutive time. They were also the first team to have claimed this prestigious title since its inception in 2001. Victory Sports Club, as last year, claimed the second place. Island Football Club (IFC) and New Radiant Sports Club got third and fourth positions respectively. 

Thinadhoo Sports Club became the most progressed team as they escalated 39 spots than last year. Hilaali Sports Club of the 3rd division, became the highest average scoring team (3.03). The bottom club this year was Adventurous when it fell 51 spots than last year. Club Lazer and Club Baiko, which played only a game this year, were the teams that played the least number of matches. Power house New Radiant Sports Club had a devastating season as they finished the 2002 season empty handed and this probably would have been its "biggest catastrophe" in the last 10-15 years. In 2002, Island Football Club and Victory Sports Club clinched 2 trophies apiece while Club Valencia grabbed the lucrative Dhivehi League title with an unbeaten record.

Football Association of Maldives (FAM) decided to rank the clubs from 2001 onwards according to FIFA rules and regulations. They give points for the number of wins, draws, defeats and etc, depending on the strength of the club. For instance, if a second division club pummels a first division club, the winner earns higher points and the looser will be deducted by a larger margin.
