BACKGROUND: I was born in Springs, 12 April 1972, listened to music from David Bowie, Madness, Sisters of Mercy, Bob Dylan, Queen, etc. Left Springs after school to study Pharmacy Degree in Potchefstroom. Started playing bass in 1993, taught by friend playing for a local Potchefstroom student band called THE CLAN. I joined THE CLAN for some appearances during the last few weeks of their existence. Mostly playing U2 covers and some original Afrikaans tunes. Moved to Somerset West in 1997 and continuing playing bass, solo. I spent time learning styles and getting exposure, via playing with other bass players, music, etc. My first official job as a bass player started September 2002, playing Bass for ABEL KRAAMSAAL en die SAALSUSTERS. Playing original Afrikaans rock tunes. ABEL KRAAMSAAL (Abie Strydom) is the brain behind the band and writes al the lyrics and music. Being a three piece band (acoustic, bass and drums) ABEL KRAAMSAAL en die SAALSUSTERS quickly gained support on the Afrikaans Rock Scene, and was invited to numerous Arts Festivals, such as Boereplass Rock Festival, Gansbaai Rock Festival and Klein Karoo National Arts Festival. In December 2002 the drummer and “ SAALSUSTERS” part was removed from the line-up and till today the band remains a two-piece Acoustic and Bass outfit, called ABEL KRAAMSAAL. With first CD being launched at end of May 2003 featuring all original Afrikaans tunes. I played bass with Gian Hanekom (Spinnekop) and Stean, aka Frik-E from Diff-Olie, and various other artists, playing mostly original Afrikaans tunes, with a little degree of covers of well known rock tunes. I play bass backing from Blues to Metal, and am starting to show an interest in Jazz and Funk playing styles. The current CD’s in my discman are the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Dave Mathews Band, Ben Harper and Nick Cave. ABEL KRAAMSAAL is a Cape Town based band, thus I am always willing to join some kind of a project locally in Johannesburg. |
