BIOGRAPHY: DONNE’ LEIGH DOWLMAN

After having played guitar since the age of 14, Donne’ was introduced to the bass by a very good friend in 1994.

Originally from East London, Donne’ moved to Pretoria in 1997 to commence the National Diploma in Light Music at the Technikon Pretoria Music Dept under the bass tuition of Marc Duby and completed her Diploma at the end of 1999.

While studying, Donne’ worked as a freelance bass player in Pretoria and JHB with 80 % of her bookings being jazz, her first love. Her strengths lie in her sight-reading, harmonic understanding and also the ability to adapt to most musical styles.

Donne’ moved back to her hometown of East London in July 2000 and has since become very involved with jazz in the Eastern Cape freelancing for jazz musicians from Rhodes University; Rick van Heerden & Nishlyn Ramana & is also resident bassist for the Alan Webster Quintet in East London.

Her more notable achievements include being selected as bassist for the National Youth Jazz Big Band at the Grahamstown Youth Jazz Festival 2001 & 2002 as well as being the bassist for the East Cape Big Band under the directorship of Alan Webster.

Most memorable gigs include having worked on the odd occasion with Avzal Ismail’s Latin Fire Band while being a student, having had the privilege of playing with Bruce Cassidy in East London, participating in the opening of the Al Jarreau Concert at the Sandton Convention Centre in November 2001 along with Old Mutual Jazz Encounter Winners, and touring Reunion Island with South African Gospel Band “Khanyisa” for 2 weeks in April 2002.

Here is link to a Gospel Band that I have been in for a while. The site is http://www.worshipunlimited.org
