Born 2 June 1957 in Witten/ Germany Married to Edda; 2 sons, Tau and Vusi ‘Real’ job: lecturer in Philosophy in Wits University’s School of Education Passions include: animal rights and welfare; vinyl/ LP records; drive-in movies Instruments fretless 4- and 5-string bass guitars, electric double bass Styles Rock, blues, reggae, crossover/ fusion, acid jazz; personal favourites also include Native American, Celtic and Asian folk musics Live Work Began playing professionally in 1983, with Wildebeest and later Khaya; longtime residency at legendary nightclub ‘No. 58’ in Hillbrow, from 1985-91; show and theatre work includes ‘Déjà Vu’ (a tribute to Crosby Stills Nash & Young), Didi Kriel’s ‘Legends I & II’ and ‘Total Eclipse’, Fiona Ramsay’s tribute to Marianne Faithfull, ‘Telegrams from Hell’, and Graham Weir’s ‘Psychodelic Cowboy and Sister Nun’; additional work with Thembi Mtshali, Thandi Klaasen, Larry Amos, Jax Myth (Terence Reis & Kate Normington), and Leonel Bastos & Be Like Water; various cruise ships between 1991 and 1995 (most memorable experience: being on the ‘Achille Lauro’ on its last ill-fated journey, when it went down); recent work with Little Sister, Kathy van Rensburg’s Feather Doctors, Jonathan Crossley, and Highway Jam (voted jazz combo of the year in Old Mutual’s ‘Jazz Encounters’ 2000).
