My Most Memorable Gig
Dawsons Hotel, President Street, Jo’Burg.
4th July 1986

Martin Simpson

This particular gig was my first ever, live performance in this country. I came down to South Africa in July 1982 but couldn’t even afford to buy the Ibanez Musician bass I had set my heart on until June the following year. A practice amp followed a year or so later and it was another year or so before I even played with anyone.
In January 1986 I got together with a fellow Brit (a Scottish axeman) and we put a pro band together with a drummer from Madeira. We called ourselves Humaniax which was a slightly adjusted version of a word that someone had made up describing the Greenpeace people - Humane Maniac’s – Humaniac’s – Humaniax – geddit?????
This band was the smallest band - member wise - that I’d ever played in and as the axeman was the songwriter and only singer, I was given the task of doubling on bass (fretted and fretless musician basses) and keyboards. Talk about thrown in at the deep end – one of the songs had a huge keyboard solo and I was still finding my way around the instrument – we sat in the dressing room before this gig putting the set list together and it was decided by the majority (the other two guys) that our opening number should be the tune that had the keyboard solo!!!!!
Well after managing to pull it off (with just one small mistake) my confidence soared and the whole evening turned out to be a blast. There were quite a few musos that came down to the gig – curious to know what these ‘imports’ were capable of doing and I think most of them went home that night with the realisation that there was a formidable new band on the block.
