Data:

Numerical or verbal descriptions that usually result from measurements of some sort.

Information:

Data that are presented in a form that is useful for a specific purpose.

Database:

A single collection of data that are stored in one place and can be used by people throughout the organization to make decisions.

Computer:

An electronic machine that can accept, store, manipulate, and transmit data in accordance with a set of specific instructions.

Artificial Intelligence:

A combination of computer hardware and software that exhibits the same type of intelligence as human beings.

Input Unit:

The device used to enter data into a computer.

Memory: (or storage unit)

That part of a computer that stores all data entered into the computer and processed by it.

Control Unit:

The part of a computer that guides the entire operation of the computer.

Arithmetic&-Logic Unit:

The part of a computer that performs mathematical operations, comparisons of data, and other types of data transformations.

Output Unit:

The mechanism by which a computer transmits processed data to the user.

Hardware:

The electronic equipment or machinery used in a computer system.

Computer Network:

A system in which several computers can either function individually or communicate with each other.

Software:

The set of instructions that tells a computer what to do.

Computer Programmer:

A person who develops the step&-by&-step instructions that are contained in a computer program.

Flow Chart:

A graphic description of the types and sequences of operations in a computer program.

Graphics Program:

A software package that enables the user to display and print data and conclusions in graphic form.

Spreadsheet Program:

A software package that allows the user to organize numerical data into a grid of rows and columns.

Word Processing Program:

A software package that allows the user to store documents (letters, memos, reports) in the computer memory or on a disk.

Management Information System: (MIS)

A system that provides managers with the information they need to perform management functions as effectively as possible.

Data Processing:

The transformation of data into a form that is useful for a specific purpose.

Statistic:

A measure that summarizes a particular characteristic for an entire group of numbers.

Frequency Distribution:

A listing of the number of times each value appears in a set of data.

Arithmetic Mean:

The sum of all the values of a set of data, divided by the number of items in the set.

Median:

The value that appears at the exact middle of a set of data when the data are arranged in order.

Mode:

The value that appears most frequently in a set of data.

Range:

The difference between the highest value and the lowest value in a set of data.

Visual Display:

A diagram that represents several items of information in a manner that makes comparison easier or reflects trends among the items.

Tabular Display:

A display used to present verbal or numerical information in columns and rows.
