Inuyasha is a half-demon who desires to become a full demon with the help of the Shikon Jewel. Kagome is a young girl who falls through a well at her home and travels 500 years back in time. Together, they will conquer all - if they will just stop arguing for ONE BLASTED SECOND!
Shippou: Exactly!
Inuyasha: SHUT up!
Shippo: No!
Inuyasha: Why you-- *tries to strangle Shippo*
Kagome: Sit boy!
Inuyasha: Agh! *falls to ground*
...Oh. And there's that, too.

Arimi is one of Kagome's three high school friends: Arimi, Eri, and Yuka.
Ayame is Koga's fiancée. She's the head of a different wolf demon tribe. Ayame is an anime only character, possibly planted there to draw minds away from Kagome and Koga as a couple so that viewers can focus more on Kagome and Inuyasha as a couple.
Bankotsu is the leader of the Shichinintai, or seven-man army. He is the youngest and shortest member, yet the most powerful. Most of the other six members are very loyal to him, especially Jakotsu, with whom he is very close. Bankotsu's weapon is a gigantic sword called Banryuu, whom Bankotsu refers to as his baby.

Gatenmaru is a moth-demon that tried to take the Tetsusaiga away from Inuyasha, only to become angry when he
discovered that it wouldn't work because he wasn't a half-demon. Then he made fun of Inuyasha and wrapped him up in a thick,
poisonous, webby cocoon-type thing. Ginkotsu is a member of the Shichinintai, or seven-man army.
Ginta and Hakkaku are Koga's top lackeys. They are always trying to keep up with their speedy leader.Gatenmaru

Hitomi is the crush of Kagome's younger brother, Sota. Sota confesses his love to her and she shares his feelings.

Inuyasha is a half-demon. His mother was a human, and his father was a powerful dog demon.

Jakotsu is another member of the Shichinintai, or seven-man army. He's gay and has a weird fetish for killing Inuyasha. Of all the members of the Shichinintai, he is the closest to Bankotsu, the leader.
Jeromaru is an incarnation of Naraku. He houses Kageromaru inside of him.
Jinenji is a gentle half-demon who is bullied and harassed by the villagers he lives by. They are convinced that he has been killing people, when it is actually another demon.

Kageromaru is an incarnation of Naraku. He is housed inside of Jeromaru. He is small and speedy.

Kanna is one of Naraku's incarnations. She has a mirror that Naraku uses to view events from the safety and comfort of his own castle.
The priestess who looked after the Shikon Jewel 50 years ago was Kikyo. She was weakened when she fell in love with Inuyasha, a half-demon. Then Naraku tricked both of them into harming each other. Kikyo died, and Inuyasha was sealed magically to a tree. 50 years later, Kagome breaks that spell on Inuyasha. Later, a witch brings Kikyo back to life, and she tries to get Inuyasha to come to Hell with her.
Kirara is Sango's pet cat demon. She can transform to make herself bigger, and she can also fly.
Koga is the leader of the Wolf Demon tribe. After finding out that Kagome can see the shards of the Shikon Jewel, he decides to make her his woman. Koga wants to defeat Naraku because Kagura, Naraku's incarnation, slaughtered a large portion of his tribe. Koga has three shards of the Shikon Jewel embedded in his legs that give him super speed. Often Koga can be mistaken for a tornado, and his followers sometimes find it grueling work just to keep up with him! Koga is often the source of an argument between Kagome and Inuyasha, as Inuyasha is always claiming that Kagome is flirting with him, even though Kagome insists that Koga "isn't her type."
Kohaku is the younger brother of Sango, and a brainwashed minion of Naraku. He doesn't remember anything about his past, except for, occasionally, Sango's face. This is probably for the best, considering what he has to forget: He grew up in the Demon Slayer's village, or Taijiya no Mura. On his first demon slaying excursion, Naraku took control of him and had him kill all of the other demon slayers, including his own father. Only Sango survived. Now Kohaku is technically dead. The only thing keeping him alive is the Shikon shard Naraku planted into his back.

The younger of the two Thunder Brothers is Manten. What he wants more than anything is a full head of hair like his brother Hiten's to attract the ladies.
Mayu is a little girl who dies in Kagome's time. She died when a fire broke out in their apartment. Her mother saved her younger brother, Sotaru, but didn't save Mayu as she didn't know that Mayu was in the apartment. Mayu feels unloved and cheated, so she tries to kill her brother. Inuyasha stops her, and Kagome saves her from eternal damnation in Hell.
Menomaru is the antagonist in the first movie. He becomes really, really, really powerful.
The woman/priestess who created the Shikon Jewel is Midoriko. Her statued form is still visible in a cave.
Miroku is a letcherous monk that travels with Inuyasha, Kagome, Shippo, Kirara and Sango. He has a hole in his hand called the "Wind Tunnel," which he can use to suck up things. The Wind Tunnel is a hereditary curse passed down to him from Miroku's father, who got it from Miroku's grandfather. The Wind Tunnel was placed there by Naraku and only by defeating Naraku can Miroku seal up the Wind Tunnel forever. If he does not, then one day he will be sucked inside his own Wind Tunnel and cease to exist. Because of this chilling prospect, Miroku wants to have an heir to keep his legacy alive in case he fails in his mission to slay Naraku. Even though he is a monk, he breaks the vow of chastity several times in order to ask pretty women if they will bear his child. Later on, though, it seems he is most interested in Sango.
Momiji is one of two girls that the dark priestess Tsubaki tricks into battling Inuyasha and his gang to buy her time. They get strands of Inuyasha and Kagome's hair and make large chibi-like replicas of them.

Myoga the flea is a retainer of sorts of Inuyasha's. He is very skittish, and always abandons Inuyasha during battle. Myoga likes to make his presence known by sucking on somebody's blood and swelling up. The first time he appears in the series Kagome tries to do him in with bug spray.
Naraku is THE bad guy in the story. He is extremely powerful and very clever. He scarcely does his own dirty work, preferring to send out puppets of himself. He makes several detachments of himself, including Kagura, Kanna, Goshinki, Jeromaru, Kageromaru, Musou, and Hakudoshi. He has Saimyoushou to spy on his detachments and to poison Miroku.
Nazuna is an ordinary village woman who is very distrustful of demons until Inuyasha saves her and her village from a large spider demon that she thought was her lord.
The first time Kagome sees Nobunaga, she mistakes him for the famous Nobunaga of the time. However, once he signs her autograph she realizes that they are not the same person. Nobunaga is very much in love with a girl named Princess Tsuyu. He saves her from the toad demon that had taken over her husband and saves her husband. Inuyasha thinks it is foolish of him to do so, since Princess Tsuyu is very happy with her husband and doesn't understand Nobunaga's feelings for her. Nobunaga travels around with a monkey that likes to sit on his head.
Onigumo was a bandit that become terribly injured. His entire body except for one eye was in a cast. He stayed, immobile, in a cave, and was tended to by the beautiful priestess Kikyo, who he came to lust for. Unable to get to her, however, he gave his body up to hundreds of demons in order to get a new body. Thus, Naraku was born. Onigumo is looked upon as Naraku's human heart and is what keeps Naraku from killing Kikyo several times.
Renkotsu is the most despicable member of the seven-man army, or Shichinintai. While the other members are all loyal to their leader Bankotsu, Renkotsu follows Bankotsu's orders mostly out of fear.
Rin is a young human child who travels around with Sesshomaru, much to the amazement and shock of Jaken. She is VERY loyal to Sesshomaru and will follow out his orders EXACTLY. One time, Sesshomaru says, "Rin, don't move." Then he turns and has an entire conversation with Kagura, and only once Kagura flies away does he say "Rin, you may move now." Rin stayed still the entire time. Rin's loyalty to Sesshomaru lies in the fact that he saved her life. Sesshomaru was recooperating from a fight with Inuyasha, where Inuyasha used the Wind Scar on him. Rin, a small, dirty girl, found him in the woods and tried to bring him fruits and nuts, only to hear Sesshomaru say that he didn't like them. So she tries to capture a fish from her village's supply, but the villager's beat her. When she returns to Sesshomaru, he asks her where she got all of the bruises on her face. She just smiles at him. Rin's parents and siblings died a long time ago at the hands of bandits, and she had been mute ever since. Koga and his wolves come to visit Rin's village, and the wolves slaughter everybody. Rin herself dies. After Sesshomaru has recovered, he finds her on a path, and decides to revive her with his Tenseiga. Rin doesn't speak until the next time you see her.
Usually a gentle creature, Rouyakan is a wolf demon that lives near Kaede's village. Naraku gives him a shard of the Shikon Jewel and he becomes more evil. He can spew wolves out of his mouth.
A minion of Menomaru, Ruri does his bidding and some of his dirty work in the first movie.
Ryuukotsei is a fantastical giant dragon that Inuyasha's father could barely defeat. Instead of killing him, Inutaisho, or Inuyasha's father, sealed him away. Inuyasha goes and releases him and then slays him to prove that he has surpassed his father.
The saimyousho are poison insects that look like wasps. They show up whenever Naraku's around and function as his spies. They are also handy to have around because they prevent Miroku from using his wind tunnel, as they are very poisonous. Naraku sents saimyoushou after Kagura whenever he wants to make sure that she's doing as she's told.
A demon slayer, Sango is Kohaku's older sister. Kirara is her pet cat demon. After her little brother Kohaku killed all of the other demon slayers, Naraku tricked her into thinking it was Inuyasha's fault. With a Shikon shard keeping her from collapsing, she set off to kill him. Later everything was explained to Sango, and she and Kirara joined Inuyasha and his troupe. Later on Sango develops a crush on Miroku, and becomes very angry whenever he asks someone to bear his child. Miroku never seems to get around to asking Sango to bear his child, it seems. What Sango wants more than anything is to have her little brother back from the clutches of Naraku, who has made Kohaku his minion. Sometimes Kohaku escapes from the castle and Sango tries to help him remember things about his past, only to have Kohaku swept away by Kagura. Sango will do anything to be with her brother. At one point she steals the Tetsusaiga for Naraku in exchange for Kohaku. At another time, Sango is about to kill both her brother and herself when Inuyasha stops her.
Satoru, a friend of Sota's, is in the hospital. His apartment caught on fire and while he survived, his mother didn't know that his little sister, Mayu, was in the apartment, and so she left her their and she died. Now his older sister's ghost tries to kill him until Inuyasha stops her and Kagome saves her from Hell.
Saya is an old demon who said he would seal the sword Sounga for 700 years. He's in the third movie.
A full-blooded demon and darn proud of it, Sesshomaru looks down in disgust upon his younger brother, Inuyasha, who was born of a human mother. Sesshomaru is unhappy with the heirloom his father left him--the Tenseiga, a sword which only has the power to heal. Sesshomaru wants a sword that can kill something, and he wants the sword his father left to his younger brother--the Tetsusaiga. If it wasn't for Sesshomaru, Inuyasha would have never found the Tetsusaiga in the first place. However, the Tetsusaiga can only be used by a half-demon or a human, as it symbolizes the love Inutaisho had for Inuyasha's human mother. Eventually, Sesshomaru gives up on retrieving the Tetsusaiga, and has Kaijinbo fashion him a sword from Goshinki's fang once he learns that Goshinki broke the Tetsusaiga. Sesshomaru is a cold, distant, and nebulous person, but a powerful and ruthless killer. He has a pet double-headed dragon named Ah-Un, and his ever faithful retainer is a small, ugly demon named Jaken. Eventually he saves the life of a human girl named Rin, and she too becomes his companion, although "companion" probably isn't the right word. Sesshomaru isn't exactly friendly towards either of them, although he does let Rin get away with things that I certainly wouldn't do: once in the manga she pulls on his mouth so that it looks like he is smiling.
Shiori is a young girl that Inuyasha is supposed to kill. However, he finds that he can't do it, because he can relate with Shiori's half-demon background. Shiori is half bat-demon, and her father, Tsukyoumaru, was killed by her grandfather, Taigokumaru.
Orphaned due to the Thunder Brothers' slaughters, Shippo is a young fox demon. Kagome sort of adopts him and he thinks after their brawl with the Thunder Brothers and he comes to think of her kind of like a mother figure. Although tiny and very young for a demon, Shippo can transform (although his transformations aren't the best) and create illusions using some toys. He can also use Fox Fire, although it is very weak.
Shouga is the long-time fiancée of Myoga. Even though she wants to get married, Myoga refuses and always chickens out. I feel sorry for her.
Sota Higurashi is the younger brother of Kagome. He lives with her at the shrine. He is always glad when Inuyasha comes to visit. Sota regards Inuyasha as a big brother, possibly even more so because he thinks of Inuyasha and Kagome as a couple. In fact, when he is crushing on Hitomi, he asks Inuyasha for advice and asks her how he and Kagome got together... which never happened. Luckily for Sota, Hitomi shared his feelings and they became sort of an item. Ah, young love.
Souten is the younger sibling of both the Thunder Brothers. For some reason, she wants revenge on Shippo, of all people, even though technically it was Inuyasha who killed her brothers. Shippo agrees to meet her and fight her. Only after they fight (their skills are dead even) does Shippo realize he's been fighting a girl. Souten's minion is Kouryuu, a tiny red dragon that she dispatches to fight Inuyasha.
Suikotsu is a member of the Shichinintai, or seven-man army, although half the time he doesn't realize it. He has two personalities: one of a kind and gentle doctor, beloved by children; one of a merciless, ruthless, bloodlusting killer. The other members of the Shichinintai try their best to awaken the evil side of Suikotsu, although he denies that he has any relations with them, since he does not remember.
A bat demon and Shiori's grandfather, Taigokumaru killed his own son, Tsukyoumaru, because he had relations with a human. He tries to manipulate Shiori as well.
A human who coveted Inuyasha's mother, Izayoi. After finding out that Izayoi was going to give birth to a half-breed, he went and stabbed Izayoi with an arrow. Thinking he had killed her, he left. Later the sword Sounga resurrects him, thinking that his hatred for Inuyasha, his brother, his father and his mother will help him defeat the Tetsusaiga and the Tenseiga. He's in the third movie.
Totosei is the swordsmith who forged Tetsusaiga and Tenseiga, Inuyasha and Sesshomaru's swords. Kaijinbo used to be an apprentice of his, although Totosei disowned him. He fixes the Tetsusaiga when it breaks. He's kind of forgetful sometimes. Totosei often comes up to the group on his three-eyed cow. He can also breath fire.
Tsubaki is a dark priestess who sold her soul to a demon in exchange for eternal youth. She wants revenge against Kikyo.
Tsukyoumaru is Shiori's father. He is a bat demon who fell in love with a mortal woman. Because of this, his father, Taigokumaru, killed him.
Princess Tsuyu is the crush of Nobunaga, and the wife of a lord who's body has been taken over by a toad demon. She is oblivious to Nobunaga's feelings towards her, but that's alright because she's married, anyway.
An ugly old witch, Urasue brings the priestess Kikyo back from the dead.
Yuka is one of Kagome's three high school friends: Arimi, Eri, and Yuka. Yuka is the one with short, straight hair.
Yura of the Hair is a scantily-clad demon who was born from a comb that was used to comb the hair of the dead. She loves Inuyasha's hair and wants the Shikon Jewel.
