GAS BUBBLE DISEASE

What is it?
This very uncommon problem results when there is too much oxygen in the water. It is most common in ponds that contain many plants and algae. The pond receives a lot of sun so a lot of photosynthesis occurs. This in turn produces a lot of oxygen that disrupts the natural balance.

The oxygen gets "pulled" inside the fish as the water tries to stabilize. The fish exhibits bubbles just under the skin and in eyes, thus the name. If bubbles form in the blood stream death may occur rapidly.

Symptoms:
Clearly visible bubbles (like tiny blisters) beneath the skin. They may also present in the eyes or on fins.

Cure:
Change 50% of the water in an effort to restore the balance of oxygen. Remove as much algae as possible and reduce live plants. If in an aquarium, reduce the amount of time the aquarium light is on.

Remember, water quality is always extremely important- so always check that first as it is often the cause of disease in aquarium fish. When treating sick fish, try to put the least amount of stress on them as possible, as stress will hinder the heeling process. Another thing is to remember is that generally, a healthy fish is a happy fish.
