INJURED

What is it?
Injuries may occur for a number of reasons. Fighting and sharp aquarium objects are among the various causes.

Usually, if the injuries are minor, the fish will heal itself. Sometimes opportunistic bacteria or fungus may infect the wound site.

Symptoms:
Anything from small abrasions to large open wounds.

Cure:
If the injury doesn't go away by itself it is probably infected. To prevent this add a mild antibiotic to the aquarium and if possible lower pH slightly to about 6.6 - 6.8. The lower pH speeds recovery, however return pH to normal as soon fish has recovered. If the wound site gets a fungal infection, have a look at our fungus pages.

Remember, water quality is always extremely important- so always check that first as it is often the cause of disease in aquarium fish. When treating sick fish, try to put the least amount of stress on them as possible, as stress will hinder the heeling process. Another thing is to remember is that generally, a healthy fish is a happy fish.
