Lang Takes a Break from Spotlight
By Ari Bendersky
When blues prodigy Jonny Lang was in Chicago last Thursday to shoot
an episode of the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno," he decided to take in more
than just the sites of the Windy City.
The 17-year-old blues musician joined local rock blues outfit the Cads
during their gig at Magoo's
Underground Lounge after performing with blues legend Buddy Guy at
Leno's temporary headquarters in the Rosemont Theatre.
Lang stopped by the small club located near Wrigley Field during the
band's first set. "A lot of times, Jonny's put in a high pressure situation
where he feels like he has to play," Tim Fitch, Lang's
production manager told JAMTV on Monday. "With this, he was able to
come in without anyone
knowing who he was and just have a good time."
Lang jumped onstage with the Cads -- who know Fitch from their high
school days in Minneapolis -- for the last two songs of the first set.
The group played a Cads original and a cover of T-Bone Walker's 1940s blues
staple "T-Bone Shuffle."
After the set, the guys in the Cads walked Lang and Fitch outside to
say goodbye, then re-entered the club to watch their new friend play with
Guy on Leno.
"It's cool that he's into stepping out of the light and hopping onstage,"
Cads guitarist Steve Hill told
JAMTV.
Hill explained that Lang isn't used to hitting such small rooms and
that he has a lot of spunk while onstage. In fact, Hill said the Cads "really
stepped up when he was leading us. It was cool, I've never played with
someone who jammed with Buddy Guy a few hours earlier."
When asked why Lang didn't stay and jam during the second set, Fitch
said, "He's only 17. He goes to bed early."
