Ok, basically I wanted to make this easy as possible for those of you who don't know any code. For those of you who do it will be clear how and why I have written instructions inside these templates - to make it easy to find the places a non-code-loving person would need to edit his/her links and uploaded photos.
Key points:
1. To use any of my templates which use images at Diaryland or any place else for that matter, you will need a place to store your images. You may store your images anyplace you want, and some places are free but many, if you store your images without maintaining a web page, will give you the boot, and your stuff will not be recoverable (this happened to me at both Geocities and Angelfire. You live and learn.) I would suggest getting a Gold Account if you are at D-land, because it is pretty cheap, easy, user friendly, D-land rocks, etc. To get one, go to Gold Account
2. You wiil need to be able to unzip zip files to download the template and image files. If you need a utility for doing so, I would suggest Winzip, available at www.winzip.com.
To install Templates:
1. Save files to your computer by clicking on the links beneath the template preview.First download the file for the actual templates which contain the code necessary to install your page.
2. Next, download the zip file that contains the image slices for the template. Most of my templates are done with image slicing, which permits cookies enabled browsers to load more quickly from page to page. This means you will notice, after you extract all of the files from your downloaded zip file, that for a given template there may be as many as six or seven image slices, each with it's own name. Not to worry, just be sure to keep each image URL with its proper name and your template will be good to go...further instructions are inside the actual code of the template to help you organize these)
3. Extract all of the files from the zip files.
4. Open the two files that contain the actual code for the template into Wordpad or Notepad so that you can edit them easily.
5. Upload into your Diaryland account each of the image files you have extracted.
6. Copy in the appropriate place in the template code (in Word or Notepad) the URL that Diaryland assigns you for each file. You will notice in the code for the template that you only need the "http..." - do not put IMG SRC (which Diaryland includes as html code for images but are not part of the address proper)anywhere in the template or the image will not work.
7. Next, follow the instructions inside the coded page to change the links so that they correspond with your URL at Dairyland. (Note: you can make as many or as few links as you want by following the examples in the code, or by deleting any that you don't want. If you want to make more links than are included in the template, follow the way these links are written EXACTLY, and use the URL of the page you want to link to. HTML is very picky, and while links are not at all hard to write, they must written precisely or they fail to work. One missing " will make a link fail.)
8. Open your HTML editor ("change your HTML") in Diaryland on the task bar on the left. Go into the option that says "entry pages". Delete everything in the text box. Block copy all the code which you edited to suit your diary from Word or Notepad into the blank text box. Click "Change". Go into the preview to see of the new template is installed. Sometimes the new template doesn't automatically show up. If this is the case, go back to your earliest entry and edit a word - say erase and retype a word - and hit "done". This usually boots the new template into place.
9. Finally, or not so finally...open your second code file - the one which says "older". Make the same changes as you did for the first template, and install in the Diaryland HTML eidtor that say "older.html archive page" . Another, easier way to do this is to copy everything from the open Word or Notepad that contained your code for your daily entries, and go to where you see:
%%short_description%%
%%date%% | %%time%%
%%entry%%
and replace this code with:
%%older_entries%%
Then, block copy this into the "older.html archive page". and there you have your older entries page.
