Aarons Birthday 09/20/02

A garage seen from outer space, by JD

The first thing you absolutely have to notice about this show was how KICK ASS the garage was. It's so huge that you forget there was a freaking camper behind the bands while they played. I mean for those of you who made it to the south side. You have to admit. That if Jesus was a gear head that would be the garage he would use. Levi pointed out that in most cases antlers make a room seem smaller but you had to squint to see them hanging up in the back. Literally you could fix a few semi trailers there.

Then there was the hosts. My goodness I can only hope that I can (and will try) to throw a party even half this good for my daughter someday. By the way, Aaron, with his surgery and not being able to walk for so long now. Deserved every minute of the show. Happy Birthday man. His dad ordered 15 pizzas for us, a full table of soda and Levi brought cookies from Elines. Plus there was no bother about the sound from the neighbors.

First off was The Right Aways from Colorado Springs. They were talented. Levi and I commented a few times on the skills of their bass player their drummer and their singer who was playing the drums at one point. It was so loud too I almost couldn't stand it. They played a good brand of Ska I could only describe as if Mustard Plug / Lets go Bowling had that bit of fun west coast flavor of a Reel Big Fish or Skankin Pickle. They even did a cover of Turning Japanese that sounded like Skankin Pickle spot on. I really wish they were around seven years ago when people weren't afraid to skank. Props to Andrew on that department. They over all were a very fun band preoccupied by making sure the audience (consisted largely of Colorado Springs kids) Was having fun. Heck they did a bad ass cover of Aint Nothin But a ‘G' Thing. What more should I say?

Bring on NAPIER! My long time friends! I can't say anything more about them but positives. For a change they opened up with Emotional Thieves. The setlist was shouted out to them by Aaron himself who knew who to make the most of a command performance. They played my favorite song, Rally Cap, while I was playing with Fiona and a Basketball in the back of the garage serving as door man. They played em all, touching on a few classics while they were at it. They even busted out a short on the spot version of happy birthday. I had a blast! I can't wait for Aaron to have another birthday. .

This was a great show! Thanks. ***JD
