Last Great Liar 9/17/02

into the furnace, by Kyle

Ah, another great show thanks to an excellent man. (Ha! I've finally written something JD can't disagree with!) Many special thanks to JD for bringing another incredible show to town. Also, many thank-you's to his wife, Carrie, for putting up with all our shit, especially JD's and my own. Now for:

The Review

Show started late, but on purpose. We felt if we delayed the start for more people, the show would go better. Right? Wrong. I believe there were less than ten people for this shin-dig. I personally blame the government, they're always trying to get me down. Or maybe it was the Big Tobacco Companies. Ah, it's all one big conspiracy anyway. Thanks to the bands for showing up early.

Mine37 got started. Good melodies and phases. I had a little trouble getting to like the vocals, but by the end I was liking these guys.

Pellet Gun was next up. Let me make a quick comment on this novel idea. Two bands, six guys, two vehicles, but the same equipment! Great idea! Same equipment means no set-up time, which also means quick show. I liked these guys. Really glad they made the trip. I was upstairs for most of the set, talking to friends again, and the vocals didn't come through to the living room. However, when I did go downstairs, the vocals added so much more to every song. Good set.

Then it was The Last Great Liar from Seattle. I was really excited about these guys. (By the way, I am fully aware that there was a girl in the band, a hard rockin' girl whom I respect to the utmost degree, but for ease of reading and the sanctity of my hand and pen, I will refer to them as "guys" for the remainder of this.) They played a good set. They play with such emotion in every song. Being from Seattle, they had a unique opportunity to experience the Seattle scene in their youth, and the influence is apparent. I love the vocals in this band, too. He has a melodic side and a roaring side that mix evenly to make for a good listen. A good example of this is on their song, "When I Die." (my personal favorite) He goes from a haunting and melodic sonnet to this yelling beast, screaming from the core of his stomach. And their guitarist, Christen, was really good, and good looking. She had this charisma in her personality and playing. She could really rip it up. Their drummer was definitely not without his own merit as well. All in all, these guys rock. Their CD is amazing and has yet to leave my stereo. They, as well, have yet to leave my mind. Definitely hope to see them again soon.
