Last Great Liar 11/10/02

Return of the Mack, by Kyle

Damn, this show left me feeling good about what we do. For the second time now, a band has returned to rock with us again. We must be doing something right. Last time Last Great Liar came was one of the worst shows (attendence-wise) yet. It even left them questioning whether or not flyers were handed out. What made them come back, I'm not sure. I credit my boyish-good looks, but parts of me leave me slightly doubting. Ah, regardless, this isn't a dissertation of my looks, it's a damn review! ...

First up was our fresh-meant, Flatline. These guys are pretty good, seeing as how their balls haven't dropped yet. Their music is alright, but it's uncomfortable to watch them. They never look like they're having fun. Whenever they play for us, their melancholy and young age always makes me think we're breaking some sort of child labor laws or something. Some advice for the youngin's: 1.) Drop your roadie, Father Time. Doesn't he embarrass the hell out of you guys? If you're unable to set up your own equipment and have to resort to this guy for help, then you don't deserve to be playing. 2.) Don't do so many covers. Especially don't open or close with one. We're more likely to remember the last thing we see and I'm sure you're not after the rep of "best Hives cover band!" 3.) Stick around for the rest of the show. It's a little bitch thing to just pack up and leave to get back to the clubhouse before dark. Maybe you'll learn something about how indie bands grow in popularity, or get some inspiration on equipment or playing, or just enjoy some good music, or maybe even how to perform a shooter while slammin a Pabst (compliments of Tad). and Finally, 4.) You're not rock stars, so drop the asshole attitudes. All considered, I think they could be an alright band once their pubes grow in. How old was Garth when his came in again?

Next was our buds, Last Great Liar. Seattle must be missing these gems. They seem to have an affinity for being on the road. Last time they were here, I was thoroughly impressed with their performance. I of course bought their CD, "doppelganger." I listened to it with reckless abandon for weeks. Energy, power, and beautiful, graceful melodies just poured from my speakers. I was extremely excited for their return. Once again, they just blew me away. One thing I did miss was the entrapped energy and intimacy of the basement. No matter, they still rocked. They played all of my favorites from the album. Christen plays with such impeccability. Her melodies seep into me. That's probably my favorite part of Last Great Liar, the melodies. This time around, I bought their new EP, "* Snowman." This EP is even better than the album! It just reeks of those melodies. They told me of plans to record again shortly, followed by another tour. Hopefully they'll remember us and grace us again. I'm sure the new recording sessions will produce an even greater EP. For this, I anxiously await.

Last, but not least, was Happy Bad Day, local hormone-driven pop-punkers. I'm starting to get into these guys. They put on a fun and energetic show. Sometime I think I'd like to hang out with these guys. I can't decide whether they're crazy and fun, in which case I'll fit right in (god only knows what mischief could ensue) or they're straightforward nice kids (in which case I could probably shock the shit out of them!) That's one of the wishes I have about them. Another is their lyrical content. Every time I see them there seems to be some sort of P.A problem, so I'm left lacking and unknowing. They do seem to enjoy themselves and have heeded some of my previous advice. I noticed increased energy and volume. Very good boys. Their "crowd" seems to be fun-loving. I heard several references to breasts, but never saw them manifested and bared, much to my disappointment. I hope Happy Bad Day can urge their friends, and even themselves, out to more shows. I think they all make a nice addition to the OliveBranch Family, and more importantly, the Cheyenne Scene.

In conclusion, Flatline desperately needs puberty, Last Great Liar rules all, and Happy Bad Day rocks out. A good night that left me with an epiphany. I now know what our scene is missing and needs more of...titty.
