Local Band Showcase 11/15/02

Killing Arkham and Burning a Warehouse, by Kyle

A straight up good night for local music. Attendance was pretty good for this one, and it sure rocked. Well, ...

Flatline got us started. They still look uncomfortable; still dickheads. I think they played the same old songs, except they threw in a Green Day cover. Covers, I mean straight note-for-note covers, are good for practice, but if I wanted to listen to Green Day I'd throw in their CD. My P.A. head died towards the end of their set, much to my despair. This seemed to upset Flatline greatly. I apologize that we don't all have parents that can buy us all the nice equipment we want and that some of us (me) have to work hard for what little we have.

A very understanding Happy Dad Day was next. They graciously accepted the short delay for the new P.A. to be set up and I think appreciated the extra set up time. They played a very good, strong set of their pop-punk. They're quite entertaining and fulfilling both musically and in their humor. I hope to see them again soon, and anxiously await any future recordings.

Next up was the local heroic crack babies, Voice of Simon. They must truly be that, crack babies, but also three very intelligent people that love music and love having a very fun and unconventional set. Every time I see them, they have come up with some new way to make the show different from anything else you've ever seen. This time included a keyboard set up for who so desired to play. I love going to see these guys play. I know that I'm about to see three friends transform themselves. The message I get from them (Levi will probably disagree with me) is that they don't care so much about the music, but rather the magic of music, especially in a live setting. I'm privy yo information that they plan to record in late December. From these sessions, I anticipate some powerful tracks. I do, however, believe these recording will lack the energy of the live show, but very strongly do not anticipate to be disappointed.

Finally was Cheyenne's next big thing, Napier. After suffering the loss of my P.A. head, I desperately needed a good performance from them. They gave all that and more in a very spirited performance. The entire mood and overtone was one of fun and energy. JD dipped into the merch bin (with due permission of course) and was throwin' stuff out like it was an ugly baby. To date, this was one of the best Napier performances I've enjoyed. While I'm somewhat on the subject, I feel the need to put Arkham to rest. Napier is a new band, whether people want to accept it or not. Napier has a new found rigor for playing, and is a decidedly better band because of it. Arkham could never put on a performance like this. Arkham never toured, Napier already has. Napier has also recorded an amazing record due out about New Year's. All Arkham ever offered up was a few 4 song EP's. They may look the same, sound the same, but the soul and driving force behind they band is much different. Arkham is dead, and Napier has risen to become the best punk band in Cheyenne (of course that's in my humble opinion, but that's the point of a review). So do us all a favor. Pull your thumbs outta your asses and quit with the "Ark...I mean Napier" jokes. They're stupid as hell and way past even being relevant.

Well, Flatline needs maturity, Happy Bad Day rocks the babes, Voice of Simon is brilliantly mad, Arkham is dead, and Napier rules all. What more can be said?
