The Voodoo Organinst 3/14/03

Only saw the solos by Dylan Lathrop

Well, it was one of those off nights in Chey-town. And I mean that in more ways than one. The weather was really quite nice as I stepped into the familiar scenery of Drak's, but it all seemed different that night. I walked through the curtain to the playing area and found out why.

My friends and I walked through and saw a somber crowd sitting on the ground, some slightly swaying to the absoloutly beautiful guitar work of Levi Rubek. His tiny amp was churning out these off beat, quirky riffs that sounded so pretty. Levi never left his guitar but only to speak to the crowd. It was personal, it was surreal, it was awesome. Levi played on, not a huge set, but enough to leave me with the thought that, "Fuck, there is more to look at in Drak's than before"

Next came Andrew Tauchen's little set. Here, we have a guy that can write some damn good tunes. I mean, abstract lyrics might not do it for some, but holy shit, I think everyone walked away with a new sense of song writing from Andrew. He tinkered on the keyboard a bit (guy can play alot of instruments) and sang his little ska hatted heart out. He then picked up that classic Telecaster that he uses and blared through something like 7 or 8 songs. His wails and howls mixed with the moody lyrics and even moodier atmospheare was quite cool indeed.

Now we come to the highlight of this show....not to take anything away from Levi and Andrew, both putting on 10 scale performances, The Voodoo Organist put on a fucking 15! My god, I've never seen a guy do so much with seemingly so little. I watched him set up an organ, a theriman (look it up kids) and bass pedals for his feet. Then he just put a little mini studio behind him. I was dumbfouned at how much noise came from this guy. And how effortless it was. He commded the audience. I mean, he owned us, that guy could get us to worship him or the devil or Voodoo or any other crazy thing. He would snap his hand, move his fingers, race his feet all singing these bluesy tunes. It was so different than any other Drak's show at that point, I'd give my left hand for more shows like these. He finished his billowing set and packed up, and at this point, I stopped watching.

I was doing door duty the rest of the night, met some interesting people, but man, the solo artist night kicked mucho ass. I hope for some more.

****Dylan out!
