What do you mean by "Speak Your Politics" ?
We're not talking just about democrats and republicans - we set this open mic up to get students up
on stage showing their social conscience. Speaking your politics could be any comment on issues like
racism, sexism, homophobia, human rights, women's rights, imperialism, war in Iraq, foreign policy,
the Bush administration, democracy, educational systems, etc... You get the idea.
Do I need to use words to speak my politics?
No, the stage will be open to any and all types of performace artists because you don't need words
to speak. Instrumental music, dance and many other performance art forms can be used to "speak";
they are languages in and of themselves.
What about profanity, cursing, or offensive language?
Please keep profanity to a bare minimum. This event is taking place in the school, so choose your language
appropriately. This is not to say that you cannot address issues that could be offensive; for example:
if a performer reads a poem about rape/ abuse of women, they are completely welcome to do so, whether or
not the issue could be seen as offensive. We live in an offensive society - your politics likely reflect that fact.
The point is to avoid unnecessary, repeated use of words like f*ck, sh*t, b*tch, etc...
