CITIES, TOWNS AND OTHER LOCATIONS

Gor has many Cities, towns, rivers, mountains etc so please find below a brief listing and as you reach the one you want (and as it is finished) click on the link for more information about it.

The planet of Gor is a spheroid, shaped like a rounded, inverted top. It is heavier in the southern hemisphere. The planet is smaller than the Earth, is a small distance closer to the Sun, and possesses a lesser gravity. Thus, the Sun looks a fraction larger from the viewpoint of Gor. The angle of the axis of Gor is also somewhat sharper than the Earth. Gor has two polar regions and an equatorial belt, similar to the Earth. It is in the same plane of orbit as the Earth and maintains such an orbit that it keeps the Sun between the two planets, thus blocking visual detection by the Earth. Gor's average temperatures tend to be somewhat stronger than those of Earth. This may be due to its larger land masses as Gor has more land area than Earth, which is covered by about 70% water. The air of Gor is also far cleaner than Earth, free of industrial toxins and pollutants.

The planet of Gor is not indigenous to our solar system. It was transported here, by the Priest-Kings, about two million years ago and set into its present location. Its location was chosen to hide it from the Earth and it is thought that the highly advanced technology of the Priest-Kings also conceals the existence of Gor from Earth's other detection capabilities. The Priest-Kings are known to be able to control gravity.

Gor also has three moons, a large one and two smaller ones. They appear white and swift moving through the sky. Only the name of one of the moons has been identified so far in the books. It is one of the small moon and it is called the Prison Moon. There is no explanation given for the origin of its name. The books do not specify if these moons were transported with Gor or if they were taken from elsewhere in our solar system to be used by the Priest-Kings. We also do not know if the Priest-Kings have any purpose for the moons.

On maps of Gor, most of the planet appears blank and unexplored. Gor is sparsely populated by humans but animal life is rampant throughout Gor. Few people know about the lands that are east of the Voltai and Thentis Mountain Ranges. There are significant sections of the equatorial jungles, north of Schendi, that are largely uncharted. No one knows what lies west on Thassa past the islands of Cos and Tyros. Ships generally do not travel more than a hundred pasangs west of Cos and Tyros. This area is known as the World's End. Anyone who has sailed there has never returned. Thassa is the name of the sole known ocean. It forms the western body of the primary landmass of Gor.

The following information on the geography of Gor is some basic information only. It does not include all of the information about several of the cities or regions listed. It is meant solely as an overview of Gor. Many of these locations recieve greater detail in other scrolls and the links are given here to those scrolls.

Citizenship is an important part of life and daily interaction of the Gorean people. Often a Gorean will be asked what city he or she is from, which is the same thing as asking who one "shares a Home Stone" with. Those without a city are considered by most Goreans to be outlaws and therefore, enemies.

ANANGO

A large island not far from Schendi. It is similar in some respects to 18th century Jamaica on Earth. Reputed to be the home of mythical "black wizards" though in actuality there is no magic on Gor.

AR

This is the largest and most populous , and most luxurious city on Gor. It is similar in many respects to the city of Rome upon ancient Earth. Citizens of Ar tend to be the most civilized and technologically developed of Goreans, and Ar is a cultural center for much of Gor, setting the prevaling fashions in many other cities. Ar is at war with its ancient enemy, the island Ubarate of Cos. A city of lofty cylinders, spires, towers, lights, and high bridges lit by lanterns connecting many of the towers. Surrounded by great walls, it's great Gate opens onto the Viktel Aria and there are forty other gates as well. Her politics lack the grandeur of the city itself. The powerful of Ar contributed to a disaster in the delta by not supporting their own army against the invading forces of Cos. Her citizenry burned their gates and tore down their walls to aid the Cosians. Those Warriors who were betrayed by their city returned to it; their goal to liberate Ar by whatever means to revenge her humiliation and regain the glory that was hers. -- Tarnsman of Gor, page 64; -- Assassin of Gor, page 25; -- Mercenaries of Gor, page 256; -- Magicians of Gor, pages 9 and 488

ARGENTUM:

Sister city to Tharna, and a producer of much of the silver mined on Gor. This city is one of the "Silver-Cities" of the Gorean north. It is similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

AR'S STATION:

A freshwater river port town on the Vosk founded four years after Pa-Kur's hordes gathered there, prior to their war against Ar. Originally established as a river colony and tributory of the Ubarate of Ar. Recently it has split away from the Ubarate and follows its own political agenda, even allying with the enemies of Ar herself. It is considered an ally of Port Cos. Conquered by Cosian Invasion forces several years ago, its Home Stone nevertheless survived and was returned to the town. Book 15: Rogue of Gor, page 62 and 63 Book 21: Mercenaries of Gor, page 164 Book 24: Vagabonds of Gor, pages18-19 Book 25: Magicians of Gor, page 16

BRUNDISIUM:

One of the largest and busiest ports of Gor and a commercial metropolis, it is 100 pasangs south of the Vosk Delta on the Thassa. The Genesian Road links it with other coastal cities. Brundisium served as the staging point for the Cosian invasion of Ar. Book 21: Mercenaries of Gor, page 38 Book 22: Dancer of Gor, pages 101 and 147 Book 24: Vagabonds of Gor, page 19

CORCYRUS:

A city southwest of Ar, which until recently was ruled by a Tatrix, Sheila of Corcyrus. She was deposed for her tyranny, and, after a lengthy war, the fortunes of the city are again on the rise. It is similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

COS:

An island 400 pasangs west of Port Kar and hundred pasangs north of Tyros; with n alliance of several cities which all exist on the island of Cos. It is known for its famous wines and its vast fleets of trading ships, as well as its imperialistic tendencies. The perpetual enemy of Ar. It's capitol city is Telnus. Other cities are Selnar, Temos and Jad. As the western border of known Gor, the waters beyond it are referred to as 'the World's End' by those who have first knowledge. To those Goreans with second knowledge, who are taught that Gor is spheroid, the expression is merely a figure of speech. FORT HASKINS:

Boswell pass, bordered by the southern edge of the Thentis Mountains and the northern range of the Voltai, opens into The Barrens, the world of the Red Savage. Fort Haskins is situated at the foot of the pass. Once a trading post maintained by the Haskins Company and later a military outpost flying the flag of Thentis, it's military and strategic influence declined with the development of the Thentesian Tarn cavalries and the growth of the population. It is once again a trading center, maintained by the Caste of Merchants of Thentis. Book 12: Savages of Gor, pages 76-77

FREE ISLANDS:

also known as exchange islands, they are administered as Free Ports by the Merchants. Included are Teletus, Tabor, and Scagnar. Others were Farnacium, Hulneth and Asperiche. In the south are Anango and Ianda, and in the far north, Hunger and Skjern, west of Torvaldsland. These islands, and free ports on the coast such as Lydius and Helmutsport, Schendi and Bazi make possible the commerce between Cos and Tyros and cities of the mainland. Book 6: Raiders of Gor, page 137

the 4 free ports maintained on the Thassa north and south of the gorean equator are Lydius, Helmutsport, Schend,i and Bazi. Book 6: Raiders of Gor, page 137

Kailiauk

Town on the Frontier of The Barrens, NE of Fort Haskins. It is a major trade center for the purchase, processing and selling of kailiauk hides taken from the massive herds which traverse The Barrens. It is also a slave trade center, dealing primarily in barbarian girls which are sold at various points along the perimeter. Book 17: Savages of Gor, pages 77 and 93-98

KASSAU:

A town at the northern bank of the forest, it is a town of wood. The town is surrounded by a wall, with two gates, one large, facing the inlet, leading in from Thassa, the other small, leading to the forest behind the town. The main business of Kassau is trade, lumber and fishing, particularly parsit fish from the plankton banks north of the town. Lumber, particularly ka-la-na and tem-wood are traded to the North, which is virtually treeless. Kassau is the seat of the High Initiate of the North. Book 9: Marauders of Gor, pages 25-28

KO-RO-BA:

Also known as "The Towers of the Morning," this city was once destroyed but has long since been rebuilt. It is a cultural center similar to Ar, but its citizenry is known for their fierce love of independence. The city produces many excellent Warriors. It is somewhat similar to the city of Athens during the Hellenistic Period of ancient Greech, on Earth. Ko-ro-ba is in a perpetual state of semi-war with the city of Treve. It is the Home Stone of Tarl Cabot, and is found high in the northern latitudes of Gor, NW of Ar and one thousand pasangs from the Sardar Mountains. Book 2: Outlaw of Gor, page 39 - 42

LARA:

Walled northern city-state, allied with Ko-ro-ba, which occupies the strategic juncture of the Vosk and Olni rivers. A freshwater port, it is otherwise typical of the mighty walled settlements of central civilized Gor. Known for its skilled Warriors, excellent sailors, and superbly trained slaves. It is similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

LAURA:

East and north of Ko-ro-ba about two hundred pasangs inland from the sea called Thassa A rough frontier town located on the Laurius River, upriver from Lydius. It serves as a staging point for the transport of bulk goods such as lumber and furs. A favored trade town for the various outlaws and woodsmen of the northern forests.

LYDIUS:

A northern free port, neutrally aligned. Govered by merchant law rather than by civil law, and loyal to no Ubarate. Located at the juncture of the Laurius River and Thassa (the sea). A large trade town, it handles much of the distribution of the raw materials harvested from the great Northern Forests, and is a major supply port for both northern and southern shipping. Book 7: Captive of Gor, page 59

MARKET OF SEMRIS:

a small town south and somewhat east of Samnium, it is famed for its markets for tarsks, four-legged and two-legged. The town square is described as neat and well maintained, set with flat stones intricately fitted together. There are shops, fountains, a closed temple and public buildings. Book 22: Dancer of Gor, pages 106 and 281

Oasis of the Battle of Red Rock:

"..the oasis of the Battle of red rock was the last of the major oases of the Tahari for more than two thousand pasangs eastward; it lay, in effect, on the borders of the dreaded dune country..." (page 179, Book 10, Tribesmen of Gor)

PORT COS:

A freshwater river port town on the Vosk originally established as a river colony and tributory of the Ubarate of Cos. Recently it has split away from the Ubarate and follows its own political agenda, even allying with the enemies of Cos itself. It is considered an ally of Ar's Station.

PORT KAR:

acing the gleaming Thassa by way of the Tamber Gulf, is the crowded, squalid, malignant city at the mouth of the Vosk Delta called Port Kar. It is sometimes referred to as the Tarn of the Sea. It is the only city on Gor that recognizes a Caste of Thieves, and it is the only city on Gor actually built by slaves under the whip of their Masters. It is virtually inaccessible except by ship or tarnback. Known as a den of thieves and pirates, its raiding fleets are among the most feared upon Gor. The city itself is squalid, decadent, and often virtually lawless. Similar to the pirate cities of the Barbary coast during the Golden age of Piracy on Earth, and to Dakar on the Gold Coast of Africa during her slave trading heyday. The city is a mass of holdings, each almost a fortress, all crossed and divided by hundreds of canals.Port Kar is ruled by a several conflicting Ubars, and, under them, the Council of Captains who are responsible for maintaining and managing the great arsenal, as well as the fleets of Port Kar. Her name is a synonym in Gorean for cruelty and piracy. Book 6: Raiders of Gor, pages 6 and 103

PORT OLNI:

A large freshwater port on the Olni River, which is a tributory of the mighty Vosk river. Walled and well defended, it guards the mouth of the Olni where it joins the Vosk. This city is a member of the Salerian Confederation. Book 17: Savages of Gor, page 88

SAMNIUM:

two hundred pasangs east and south of Brundisium, a walled city, spared the savageries of war with Cos, because of her alliance with them. Book 21: Mercenaries of Gor, pages 9 and 14

SCHENDI:

"Many goods pass in and out of Schendi, as would be the case in any major port, such as precious metals, jewels, tapestries, rugs, silks, horn and horn products, medicines, sugars and salts, scrolls, papers, inks, lumber, stone, cloth, ointments, perfumes, dried truit, some dried fish, many root vegetables, chains, craft tools, agricultural implements, such as hoe heads and metal flail blades, wines and pagas, colorful birds and slaves. Schendi's most significant exports are doubtless spice and hides, with kailiauk horn and horn products being of great importance. One of her most delicious exports is palm wine. One of her most famous, and precious, exports are the small carved sapphires of Schendi. These are generally a deep blue, but some are purple and others, interestingly, white or yellow. They are usually carved in the shape of tiny panthers, but sometimes other animals are found as well, usually small animals or birds.....The population of Schendi is probably about a million people. The great majority of these are black. Individuals of all races, however, Schendi being a cosmopolitan port, frequent the city." (page 115, Book 13, Explorers of Gor)

TABOR:

One of the other "exchange islands," south of Teletus. Also governed according to merchant law. A free port allied to no city or Ubarate.

Tarnburg:

a city in the southern, more civilized, ranges of the Voltai, it is essentially a mountain fortress located two hundred pasangs to the north and east of Hochburg. This high city is the home of Dietrich of Tarnburg, a renowned military strategist, the victor in multiple engagements, and the innovator of several military techniques, defenses, formations, etc. Book 21: Mercenaries of Gor, pages 31-33]

TELETUS:

The largest of the central "exchange islands," governed not by civil authorities but rather according to merchant law. A free port allied to no city or Ubarate.

THARNA:

Once controlled by a a total gynocracy, it is still governed by a female ruler, or "Tatrix." The male portion of the population has long since regained control over the city, and with the exception of the Tatrix, men rule Tharna almost entirely. There are only very few freewomen in the city of Tharna, the entire female population consisting almost completely of female slaves. Tharna, and its sister city of Argentum to the south, are known for their silver mines and production of that metal. Their blue helmets can distinguish Tharnan Warriors from warriors of other cities. Tharnan males are recognized by the two yellow cords they wear tucked in their belts. This is used to bind slaves. It is similar in some ways to the ancient Earth City of Carthage.

THENTIS:

A fortress city in the Mountains of Thentis. Possessed of some agriculture, particularly the export of wool from its goat-like mountain hurts and its export of beans used to make "Black Wine" (coffee). Also famed for its great Tarn flocks, which are indigenous to the Mountains of Thentis. Most of the tarns on Gor are bred here. This city is not currently at war with anyone, except perhaps the city of Treve. It is similar to several Tyrolean mountain cities found in the Southern Alps in ancient Earth.

TI:

Walled river city situated on the Olni River north of Tharna. It is the seat of the Salerian Confederation, an alliance of four cities dedicated to the restriction of imperialism and piracy on the Olni River. Known for its superb Warriors. It is similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

TOR:

The largest and most populace of the desert city-states of Gor. Located in the far south, to the northeast of Turia, at the edge of the vast Tahari wasteland. It is a major trade center and the focal point of hundreds of desert caravan routes. It is also a cultural center for the tribesmen of the Tahari, providing the bulk of trade goods both to and from the desert regions. It is similar in many respects to ancient Earth Baghdad.

TORCADINO:

Because of it's location at the intersection of various routes, the Genesian, the Northern Salt Line, the Northern Silk Road, the Pilgrim's Road, and the Eastern Way (or Treasure Road), Torcadino is a crossroads city. Once an ally of Ar, it served as Cosian stronghold and staging center, until reclaimed by Deitrich of Tarnburg. Torcadino is also notable for it's two aqueducts, built a century ago, which bring fresh waer from the Issus, a northwestwardly flowing tributary of the Vosk River. Book 21: Mercenaries of Gor, pages 101 and 152

TORVALDSLAND:

Not actually a city, but a scattered group of settlements in the far north. Famous for its inhabitants, the Torvaldslanders, who are similar in most respects to Earth Vikings of the early medieval period. Known for its superb sailors and the rough mannerisms of its denizens.

TREVE:

A hidden city in the Voltai Mountains, accessible only by Tarnback. It has little or no agriculture, and exists solely through raiding and warfare. Known for its fierce independence, its love of warfare and its superb tarnsmen. Currently this city is at war with practically everyone, notably the city of Ko-ro-ba. Many years ago it was the target of a retributory tarn strike by the forces of Ar, which turned out to be the largest and bloodiest tarn battle in the history of Gor, in which thousands of tarnsmen clashed in aerial battle for days. It ended in a draw... Ar did not pierce the defenses of Treve, but Treve suffered terrible casualties in fending them off. Neither side wishes to repeat this action, nor does Treve raids the territories of Ar. Treve is similar in certain respects to the ancient Earth City of Sparta.

TURIA:

Often referred to as "the Ar of the south," it is the largest of the southern Gorean cities. A walled city of the southern coastal plains, it was once conquered by the Nomadic Tribes of the Wagon Peoples, but has long since been rebuilt. It is an opulant trade center similar in many ways to Constantinople on ancient Earth.

TYROS:

An alliance of several cities which all exist on the island of Tyros. Known for its great fleets of raiding ships. Along with its ally the Ubarate of Cos it is currently at war with the city of Port Kar. It is similar in certain respects to the ancient Earth Island of Crete.

VICTORIA:

A freshwater port on the Olni River, which is a tributory of the mighty Vosk river. This city is a thriving river town, which was instrumental in the defeat of the Vosk Pirates several years ago. A member of the Vosk League, 19 river towns united against river piracy on the Vosk.

VONDA:

A fairly large port city on the Olni river, which took part in a disastrous territorial war against Ar several years ago. Now rebuilt, it is known for its production and training of male Gladitorial fighting slaves. It is therefore a large Gladitorial center. Free women are typically well received there, and such free women own several of the training houses. It is similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.
