ROBERT'S LINE

Through the years to find the thread that made
me who I am; to find my place in Robert's line
and help me understand. Three hundred years
of love and pride, and faith in God to be their
guide. Robert and Hanna to Cecil N. and
Bessie G. This is the fabric woven in me.

Heber Noseworthy and Ruby Bonnell thought
that Cecil John was swell. Ida Bella and Aunt
Ruth too, are all part of me and you.

Within the pool of endless light God linked us all
to make things right. Each one unique yet still the
same, into this world on time we came. The strength
of one passed on to the other; father and mother to
sister and brother; uncles and aunts and cousins
galore weaving a thread through creation's door.

Thanks to all that walked with me through the
years my strength to be, for now I know just
what it means, to have in me the Whitten genes.

    Descendants of RobertWhitten

    Robert Whitten's brother William was the employer of ten fisherman on the 1704 census and was to all intents certainly in control of the major fishing effort on the Whitten Estate, then occupied by their father and two sons. The father died intestate and the property came into posession of his wife Elizabeth On 5 Oct 1817. Letters of probate were issued to Robert Whitten and his brother in law John Ebsary. Unfortunately the documents relating to the manner the estate was disposed of are not available.

    We next find Robert and his wife Hannah Tucker in Petty Harbour, where he witnessed weddings, wills etc. He died there 14 July 1833 and was followed by Hannah 17 feb 1835 age 78. It is assumed that they moved to Petty Harbour in their final years and were in the care of their youngest daughter Rachael in this period.

    After the death of her husband Thomas Chafe, their eldest, Elizabeth, relocated to 150 Hamilton St., leaving Rachael only in Petty Harbour

    Notes Hannah was the daughter of Robert Tucker and Ann from England who settled in Broad Cove later known as St Phillips. They later in life moved to Petty Hr in the care of their daughter Rachael and died there References Canon Walter Smith and Mabel Chafe

    1780 Elizabeth married Thomas Chafe 1 Jan 1800 Notes On his death she moved to Freshwater Mills (This was the site of the dam for Bennett’s mill) It was in the area where Victoria Park bounds Hamilton St) her house address 150 Hamilton St This house was later occupied by her son Thomas and his daughter Amelia and Phillip Williams.

    1782 William a sea Captain married Ellen French 26 Oct 1815. The French’s were one of the oldest R/C families in Petty Hr and long moved out of it. They lived near the Basilica and I know little of them.
    1784 Mr Whitten’s infant daughter dies 18 Dec 1876
    1786 Robert married Dinah Butler 1805 All Roberts descendants on the Southside come from HIM
    1788 John died 3 Sept 1790
    1792 Mary married Charles Stacey 15 Aug 1815 witnessed by her sister Rachael and husband William Chafe
    Notes Stacey was a St Johns Merchant whose premises were located on Whitten land west of the senior Whitten
    he was congregational
    1790 George Married Mary Chafe 24 May 1828. His large family were born in Petty Hr He moved to Freshwater Mills six doors west of his Sister Elizabeth
    20 Jan1790 Rachael married William Chafe 3 Dec 1816
    Witnessed by her father and Francis Chafe Williams cousin They remained in Petty Hr

    Al this got complicated when the parents of George’s wife Mary Chafe moved to 38 George St on land his wife Jane Undry inherited from her Father John Undry the church Sexton. Mary’s brother Henry moved in with his parents and her brother Aaron took a house on Fresh water Mills near George and Elizabeth You have to understand this as these are the first Chafes in St Johns.
