More Than That: Prologue

My shattered dreams and broken heart are mending on the shelf I saw you holding hands, standing close to someone else Now I sit all alone, wishing all my feeling was gone I gave my best to you Nothin' for me to do But have one last cry

One last cry before I leave it all behind I gotta put you outta my mind this time Stop livin' a lie I guess I'm down to my last cry

Cry...

I was here You were there Guess we never could agree While the sun shines on you I need some love to rain on me Still I sit all alone, wishing all my feeling was gone Gotta get over you Nothin' for me to do But have one last cry

One last cry before I leave it all behind I gotta put you outta my mind this time Stop livin' a lie I know I've gotta be strong Cuz 'round me life goes on, and on, and on... and on...

I'm gonna dry my eyes right after I get my one last cry

One last cry before I leave it all behind I've gotta put you outta my mind for the very last time Been livin' a lie I guess I'm down I guess I'm down I guess I'm down to my last cry

-One Last Cry, by Brian McKnight

It wasn't a final goodbye for Nick and Leah when she left the house that they had shared to go back to Seattle. She had meant to leave town, go back home, and forget all about Nick, her best friend who claimed he was in love with her, but that wasn't how things worked out.

Leah had realized as her plane touched down in Seattle at 2:30 in the morning that she had panicked and been awfully irrational. She didn't believe that Nick was in love with her and she refused to do so, but she knew that she still wanted her best friend in her life no matter what had happened back in Florida. She'd called him a few days later, after regaining all of her courage, and told him that she didn't want him out of her life; in fact, she needed him. Nick tried to explain that he loved her and wanted her to come back, but Leah told him that though she wanted him to stay in her life, there was no way that he could keep insisting that he was in love with her ... they would have to go back to being friends. At first Nick didn't know if he could do that. But after a few days of thinking about it, he realized that his life without her was hopeless and incredibly difficult, and he called her and told her that he would rather be just her friend than be nothing. He didn't tell her he loved her again.

Leah moved back to The Keys two weeks later and immediately picked up where she left off. Nick was doing busy with the Boys, their latest CD about to be released, and Leah was in school and working. They were best friends again, but there was a strange tension between the two that didn't get passed either of them. They both sensed it, but they ignored it and never mentioned it to the other.

Five months after Leah moved back another problem arose. This problem came in the form of a young, male college student. His name was Freddy and Nick was stuck seeing the two together on almost a daily basis. It was the hardest thing that Nick had ever gone through, where his heart was concerned, but Nick knew that all he could do was stand back and let Leah live her life. If she didn't want him there was nothing he could do about it. She apparently wanted Freddy and Nick would have to live with that. But could he?
