Chapter Twelve

An hour later they were still walking. There were no trees around, except for some woods that were up ahead. They weren’t running now, only jogging. Suddenly Gina stopped and turned around. “Oh my gosh someone’s coming!” She yelled. The minute she said that everyone started running towards the woods. By the time the reached the woods they could see the headlights of a car coming around the bend. The car passed on without any problems. They got out of the woods and began walking again as soon as the car was out of sight. “That was close.” Nick said. “I thought it was them coming after us.” Gina took a deep breath, that had been way too close. At the end of this road everyone cheered. They had finally come to a gas station. Liz didn’t say anything though. “How far has it been since we left?” She asked Nick. He looked at her puzzled. “I guess about 8 of 9 miles. Why?” Liz looked back at the way they came. “Because John warned us not to come to the gas station that was 10 miles away because they would look there. We need to keep going and not stop here. Plus we would have to wait here until it has opened and that might be a while. There’s no where to hide around here.” Nick’s eyes grew large and he turned to A.J. who was standing the closest to him. “Hey, come on, we’ve got to go somewhere else.” A.J. looked at Nick with shock. “What?” Nick explained to him what Liz had told him. “I forgot about that.” A.J. replied. “Come on everyone, we’ve got to keep walking.” After explaining to the others what Liz had said they all decided that would probably be the wisest thing to do.

Liz looked at her watch; it was now almost 1 o’clock. They had been walking for almost 2 hours. Her feet were killing her. “I hope we get somewhere soon.” She thought to herself. She didn’t have to wait too much longer. Not too far ahead there was a grocery store. It was open too! Before they could get there they heard another car coming along the road. “Hurry, let’s hide behind the building.” Howie said. “Split up into groups of 2 or more so we can hide better. If you’re caught yell.” Howie, Gina and A.J. ran one way while Kevin, and Nick ran another way. Liz and Heather raced off towards the back of the building. Howie, A.J. and Gina were hiding behind the trash dumps near the side of the building. From where they were they could see the car very well. It had now stopped, but no one was getting out. Kevin and Nick were still running and A.J. quietly yelled to them to find somewhere and quick. They found a hiding place near the back door. Nick looked around trying to see if he could find Liz or Heather. They were no where in sight. He hoped that they had found somewhere to hid. Meanwhile at the car Joe was sitting in the front seat thinking. “They’re probably here somewhere. Let’s all split up, if you find them holler. I’ll take the back of the building, Andy you take the sides and Ben, you take the front and the inside. If it wasn’t open 24 hours a day then we wouldn’t have to worry about looking in there.” Ben was one of the guards. He was there instead of John. The split up and went their separate ways. Nick still hadn’t seen Liz or Heather. “Do you think their alright?” He asked Kevin. Kevin nodded, “They’re smart enough to find a good hiding spot. They probably have the best hiding spot.”

They did have a good hiding spot. They had climbed up the ladder that led to the top of the building and were peering down below them at the others. From up there they could see Nick, Kevin and Joe. Joe looked very angry and was stomping around making enough noise to let Nick and Kevin know how close he was without looking. So in a sense Joe was helping them in a way by making all that noise. “Hey,” Ben yelled to Joe. “They’re not inside, do you want me to look on the roof?” Joe looked at him. “They’re not smart enough to look on the roof. Go ahead and check anyway though.” Ben started up the ladder and was halfway up when Nick whispered to Kevin. “I’ll be Liz and Heather are on the roof. That’s why we can’t find them. I hope they know he’s coming up and that there’s somewhere for them to hid up there.” He said frantically. Kevin looked up at the roof. “I hope they’re not up there, because if he finds them he could just throw--” He stopped and looked at Nick and then changed his mind about what he was going to say. “Don’t worry, they’ll be alright.” Nick didn’t look to sure about that but crouched down farther in his spot. The girls heard Ben ask if he should go up on the roof and began to search for another place to hide. There were some small buildings over near the side. They could hide there and then while he was back there they could run and get down the ladder, if it was safe and go inside and call the police. Liz told Heather her plan and they ran to hid behind one of the buildings. The ladder was on the side of the store and Joe and Andy were in the back looking around, Which meant it would be easier for the girls to get down without being seen. Liz noticed one of the doors opened and could be locked from the outside. Another idea formed in her mind as Ben climbed up the ladder.

“Hey Ben.” Andy hollered up to him. “We’re going back to the car, when you’re done come join us.” Ben nodded and continued up the ladder, he didn’t have much further to go. The girls got in their positions ready to put their plan into action. As soon as Joe and Andy had gone around front Nick and Kevin ran to hide with A.J. and the others. The minute Nick got there he asked Howie if he had seen Liz or Heather. “No, come to think of it I haven’t.” He replied. “Where do you think they are?” Gina asked. Nick didn’t answer right away and then Gina gasped. “You don’t think they’re on the roof do you?” Kevin nodded. “There’s a good chance that they are. Right now we need to watch out in case Joe and Andy come back though. Keep your eyes out for the girls too.” On the roof Ben had finally made it to the top. He was walking around one of the buildings when he saw them. “Gotcha!” He said slyly. Neither of the girls said anything as the door shut.

Nick kept his eyes on the roof, he couldn’t see the ladder from this side of the store but he could sort of see of the roof. He had seen Ben go behind one of the buildings, but he didn’t see him come out. He didn’t see any sign of the girls either. Five minutes passes, and then ten. Joe grew restless in the car. “What’s taking him so long?” He muttered. “It’s a big roof and he took a long time getting up the ladder. He’s probably slowly coming down right now.” Andy replied from the back seat. “Well why don’t you go find out?” Joe said sounding irritated. Andy opened the door and started to get out of the car. Then he remembered something and leaned back in to tell Joe. As he was talking neither of them saw Liz and Heather run into the store. By the time Andy had finished talking the girls were inside making a phone call to the police. When she was done she motioned for heather to follow her and then hid in the bathroom until help came. Andy walked around to the back and stood at the bottom of the ladder. “Hey Ben, are you up there?” There was no reply. So Andy started climbing up the ladder in search of him.

Joe leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes. Already it had been five minutes since he had sent Andy up after Ben. “Why do I get all the stupid people to help me anyway?” He mumbled to himself. He didn’t see the flashing lights coming up behind his car. He was too busy thinking about what he would do to those kids once he got a hold of them again. They had caused him enough trouble.
