Chantale was sitting on her bed in the dormroom when she heard a knock at the
door.
“I got it!” She told Nicole, who was sitting in the computer chair across the
room, talking to her mom on the phone.
Chantale got up off the bed to answer the door. When she opened it, she was
greeted by Kelly, who had her hands full with a groceries.
“Hey Kel!” Chantale greeted.
“Hey loser! Help me with these bags will ya?” Kelly said Chantale.
“Mom, I have to call you back. Kelly just walked in the door.” Nicole told her
mother. She hung up the phone by the computer and went over to the door where
her friends were standing. “Hey Kel!!” She said, giving her friend a bear hug.
“Welcome back! We missed you around here didn’t we Chantale!”
Chantale had put the grocery bag she was holding on the floor and was standing
out in the hall looking in one direction and then the next.
“Ummm…Chantale? What the heck are you doing?” Kelly asked her crazy friend.
Chantale turned around facing Kelly with a look on her face like she was going
to cry. “Where’s Nick?” she asked, her bottom lip sticking out.
“And Brian! Did you bring Brian!?” Nicole asked excitedly.
“Oh yes! I picked all the guys up at the grocery store. Kelly bent down and
started going through a bag. She got the sodas out and handed them to Chantale
and Nicole. “Here ya go guys.” She said. Kelly got out the magazine and handed
it to Nicole. “Here is Brian! And Nick, Chantale!” She exclaimed.
Nicole gave Kelly a smart allelic look.
“Psh, this is NOT Brian and Nick but I suppose it will have to do.” She told
her.
She took the Teen People magazine and went to sit on her bed, Chantale at her
heels. They began looking through it as Kelly brought the rest of her few bags
into the room from the hall. She shut the door and walked over to her bed and
sat down. It’s so good to be back! She said to herself as she looked around her
personal corner of space. She got her stuffed animal panda bear out of her bag.
She never went anywhere far away without him. Panda, as she called him, was sort
of a good luck charm. Her mom had given it to her when she had broken her arm
about 2 years ago. Ever since then she had loved panda bears. She set Panda on
her dresser and gazed over the dance trophies, dance shoes, and ribbons that she
had won in the past 14 years she had taken dance. All the girls in the room
were 19, and Nicole had a birthday coming up in a month. Kelly had gotten a
scholarship to Orlando University because of her dancing. It was what she
loved, what she lived for. She took her eyes off her prized possessions and sat
down on her bed. She laid back and looked at her two friends who were busy
reading through Backstreet Boys article. She smiled and put her hands under the
back of her head and looked at the ceiling.
Kelly had almost drifted off when she heard Chantale’s voice. “Oh my God Kelly!
Ahh you have to do this!!”
Kelly sat up abruptly on her bed and crossed her legs Indian style, pulling her
dark blonde hair behind her ears. “What? What do I have to do?” she asked
curiously.
Nicole began reading aloud from the magazine.
“And with the new tour starting soon, Backstreet Boys will be on the lookout for
5 female dancers”—With the word dancers, Kelly’s lit up, her eyes widening.
“Oh my god” she whispered, her hands covering her mouth.
“Wait, I’m not finished!,” Nicole told her friend. “The people who are in
charge of finding the dancers for the Backstreet Boys upcoming tour will be at
Orlando University College from 12:00 pm-5:00 PM on Saturday, February 10th and
1:00 PM -6:00 PM on Sunday, February 11th. If you have any intrest in being a
Backstreet Boys dancer for their upcoming tour, give the Orlando University a
call for further information. (618) 555-8689. We’ll see you there!”
Kelly looked at Nicole and Chantale who were staring back at her, their eyes
wide and a look of shock on their faces; she imagined she had the same look on
her. “Holy shit you guys!” Kelly exclaimed, jumping up from her bed.
She hurried to the other side of the room and took a quick look at the calendar.
“Oh jeeze, that is only a month away!” She went over to her bed and sat back
down, taking in what she had just heard from her friend.
“Kelly!” Chantale called “What on the earth are you waiting for! Call the
number!”
“You guys think I really should? I mean, come on, what are my chances? One and
a gazillion? I probably won’t even get to see the people anyways.”
Chantale and Nicole both looked at each other. “Kelly, what are you talking
about? You can do this!” Nicole said confidently. “You WILL do this! If I have
to drag you down there myself, you are doing it. It is the freakin Backstreet
Boys! And they are holding the auditions at our school! How much better can
this get?!”
“Kel, you are the most talented dancer I have ever seen, and I mean that, you
know I do,” Chantale told Kelly with so much truth. “You know I mean it, you
know Nicole means it, you know you think it and mean it.”
Nicole picked up the cordless phone and tossed it at Kelly. “Come on Kel”
“What’s the number again?” Kelly asked.
Chantale smiled at Kelly. She got the Teen People and flipped to the page with
all the information on it. “555-8686.”
Kelly dialed the number and took a deep breath. The line began to ring.
