Four days later Emily, Marissa, Heather, Kendayl, Anya, my parents, Nick and I were waiting at the airport for David's plane.
"Flight 108 from San Francisco is now disembarking," the voice said. We looked over at the gate. Odds were David was flying first class thanks to all his parents' frequent flyer miles. Sure enough, he was the sixth person off the plane.
"David!" I called. He looked over in our direction.
"Oh my God," Heather said. We all ran over and hugged him. Then Nick walked over and shook David's hand. They looked straight at each other.
"Hey, it's twins," Emily said.
"That's scary," Kendayl said. David and Nick were still staring at each other.
"That's so cool," Anya said. I saw a smile curl on Nick's lips. I wasn't quite sure what he was thinking, but I had a feeling it was nothing good. I gave him a look and he just smiled back at me.
"I'll drive David back," Nick volunteered.
"Sure, Sammy you ride with them," Dad said.
"Sure," I agreed. I wanna know what you have up your sleeve Nicky Poodle, I thought.
"Lemme help you with that," Nick grabbed one of David's bags.
"The rest should be in baggage claim," he said.
"We'll go on home, you know where to find us," Mom said.
"We'll see ya there," I said. The three of us walked to baggage claim and got the rest of David's bags. I kept looking back and forth between the two.
"How was your trip?" I asked David.
"Not bad, calm air fortunately," he said.
"That's cool," I said. "You remember Nick."
"Of course, it's been a while," he said.
"Yeah," Nick agreed. "We'll need to catch up, maybe over a drink or something."
"Know any good singles bars?" David joked. He always had a girlfriend.
"Are you still with Caroline?" I asked.
"Nope, we broke up last week. She found some lifeguard she liked better," he said. "No big deal. I haven't been single in over a year."
"I like being single," I said. "More freedom."
"I don't mind being attached," Nick said. "It's got its good points."
"Yeah, nookie," I said.
"Hey now, that's a strike against the manhood," David said. I laughed.
"It's true," I said. "Ask him." Nick blushed. He didn't want to admit it in front of me even though he knew I knew why he was with Jessica.
"That's man talk girl," he said. I laughed.
"Yeah, whatever," I said. We walked out to Nick's car and threw David's stuff in there. As we were driving Nick posed an unusual question to David.
"Hey, can you sing?" he asked.
"Yeah," David said, "I guess as well as the next guy."
"Cool, do you know any BSB songs?" he asked. David gave him a strange look.
"With Sam as my cousin, of course," he said. I giggled.
"I love you too David," I said. "What are you getting at Nick?"
"How would you like to be a Backstreet Boy?" he asked. David's jaw dropped.
"What? Are you insane?" he said. "I can't do that no way….what are you talking about?"
"I say you and me switch places. When the tour starts again you'll be Nick Carter and I'll be David Riech," he said.
"Nick that's crazy," I said.
"No it's not. He knows the songs, I can teach him the basic dance moves and we look like freaking twins," he said. "Even the guys wouldn't know."
"Of course they would," David said.
"No they won't, by the time the tour starts again, I won't have seen any of them for over 2 weeks. If I look a little different it's no big deal," he said.
"You're nuts," I said. "It'll never work."
"If David agrees to do it, I'll make it work," he said. "Come on David, you'll get all the money from this leg of the tour. It's nothing to sneeze at." David thought for a moment. It was a tempting offer.
"No one will know?" he said.
"Just us three,"
"And I'm getting paid?"
"Well."
"I'll do it." I felt my breath catch in my throat. From now on nothing would be the same.
