Chapter One
"I’m sorry Shane, but I have to do this," Elizabeth said, taking seemingly random things from her room and putting them into a box.
"But why?" Shane asked, his voice straining.
"I have to find myself. I have no idea what is going on in my life! I need to do this," she answered.
"Where are you going?"
"Germany…Berlin, Potsdam… I won’t know for sure until I get there," she answered.
"This is insane! You do realize that, don’t you?"
"Shane, I never expected you to understand. This is just something I need to do for myself."
"How long will you be gone for?"
"However long I need," she answered.
Shane was sitting on their bed, helplessly watching his girlfriend of 2 years put a lot of her things into a box or one of 2 suitcases. This whole scene was tearing him apart. He knew she needed to sort through some things, but he never thought she’d do this. He never thought she’d leave… she’d leave their home, especially never thought she’d leave him.
"Shane…baby…I’m so sorry," she said, seeing the sadness in his blue eyes.
"I’m guessing you leave soon," he replied, his voice wavering a bit.
"My flight leaves in 4 hours. I need to be there 2 hours early since it’s an international flight," she answered.
When Elizabeth had things packed, Shane just watched as she loaded her things into her friend Christine’s car. When they were done, Christine started the car. Elizabeth turned around, taking a look back at Shane who was standing in the doorway to the apartment complex. He was leaning against the doorframe.
She ran back up the stairs, holding Shane tightly while he cried a little.
"Shane, you’ll be ok. I’ll let you know when I get settled in Germany. I love you," she whispered in his ear.
She let go, and ran back down the stairs and quickly got into the car. Shane could only watch as Elizabeth faded into the distance.
