Chapter 20

Lila managed to drag herself out of bed and throw on some makeup the next morning. She was going to get some ice cream and rent some chick flicks for the night. As she opened the front door, she nearly ran into someone who was about to ring the bell.

“Nick! What are you doing here?” she exclaimed.

“I wanted to talk to you and apologize for kissing you on the beach last night,” he replied. She noticed he was picking at his fingernails like he always did when he was really uncomfortable.

“Come in.”

When they were comfortably situated on the couch, Nick cleared his throat and spoke up. “I’m sorry. I didn’t help do you any good by kissing you last night.”

“So you’re saying you don’t have feelings for me.”

“That’s irrelevant to how the guy you love feels about you.”

Surprised that he hadn’t figured it out already, Lila debated with herself over whether or not to tell him. “You are the guy I love,” she finally mumbled, barely above a whisper.

“What? I…I don’t know what to say, Lila,” he said. “I love you, too, but I also have a girlfriend whom I care deeply about.”

“I think you need to reevaluate your feelings, Nick, because I don’t see how you can be in love with two girls at once.” Her eyes filled with tears, but she quickly wiped them away.

“Maybe I should go. I’m sorry, Li.” He stood up and left the room. A few seconds later, she heard the door close.

“God, could you be any more confusing, Nick?” she shouted into the empty house.
