“I should probably get back to my hotel, huh?” he said. She nodded. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Li.”
“See you later, Nick,” she replied. As he closed the door, the phone rang. She picked it up. “Hello?”
“Lila, you’re still awake?” Josh said. He was slurring his words, probably because he had been studying so hard and he was tired.
“Yeah, I’m still awake. I couldn’t sleep,” she lied. She knew Josh would get possessive if she told him Nick had been over.
“Oh. I just wanted to wish you a happy anniversary,” he said. “I love you.” He drew out his you into a long yoouuuu.
If she hadn’t known any better, she would have thought he was drunk, but surely he wasn’t. She giggled. “I love you, too. Are you ready for that test tomorrow?”
“Not really,” he stated.
Before she could reply, she thought she heard a female voice in the background. “Hurry up!”
Her eyes narrowed, but she didn’t want to jump to any conclusions. “Is someone there with you?”
“No, I’m alone. Why?” he asked.
“Never mind. I thought I heard someone in the background. Maybe not,” she murmured. Still, she could have sworn she heard a female voice, and he had to have done something; if it were an innocent situation, he would have told her someone was over.
“Listen, baby, I have to go,” he said. “I’ll see you tomorrow and we have a date Friday.”
“Yeah, bye,” she said detachedly. Her mind was still trying to figure out who that could have been.
She hung up the phone and climbed into bed, too exhausted to change out of her clothes from the day. ‘I’m being paranoid,’ she reasoned. ‘Maybe I’m just looking for an excuse to get out of this relationship.’ But that couldn’t be. She loved Josh. She was probably just sleepy and paranoid from her last boyfriend, who cheated on her several times. When she finally managed to convince herself of that, she fell asleep without another thought.
