Chapter 13

Michelle’s eyes fluttered open, and for a moment, she was disoriented. Brad wasn’t there, was he? Hadn’t she broken up with him? “Oh, my God,” she mumbled when she saw what, or rather, who, was next to her in bed. Had she…? She quickly recalled what had happened the previous night and then let out a sigh of relief. No. They had made out for a good two hours, but luckily, they hadn’t done anything more.

She studied him carefully as he slept. His long, thick eyelashes, concealing those innocent blue eyes, his short, silky, blond hair, the hair she longed to run her fingers through, his rosy cheeks, his yummy pink lips curved into a slight, sexy smile…God, he was a beautiful man. He really was. Still, she wasn’t sure she actually loved him. There was definitely some kind of feeling there, but was it more than friendship? His looks made him so damned tempting, though. Resisting the urge to press her lips against his smooth, clear forehead, she made herself content by rested her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes just as he woke up.

“Good morning, babe,” he groaned. Then he leaned towards her to kiss her.

In a split second, she had to make a decision, and a thousand questions flew through her mind. Had she really been serious last night? Was she really falling in love with him? Or had she just been caught up in the moment? Certainly, he was handsome, but was that the basis of her attraction to him? Or even worse, could she simply be trying to find someone to help her get over Brad? She couldn’t decide, but she knew she had to say something to buy her some time. If she kissed him without knowing for sure, that would be leading him on. “Nick, I…”

He pulled back quickly and looked down, embarrassed. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”

“Done what?”

“Tried to kiss you. I guess I shouldn’t have done anything. You’re not emotionally stable right now with the breakup and everything. I should have just left it alone and…”

She sighed and looked away from him. “Do we agree, then, that last night was just a fling?”

“Yeah, I think so. It was nothing. If we’re really meant to be together, that’s how it will work out, but I don’t think either of us really want a relationship right now.”

“You’re right.” She rolled out of bed. “I’m going downstairs to make breakfast. Want anything in particular?”

“Actually, I was gonna go visit Brian today. I’ll stop at McDonald’s and pick up something for myself. Thanks anyways, though.” Ugh, why couldn’t he take his eyes off her? He shot out of bed and ran out of the room before he could remember last night, the sweet taste of her lips, her magical hands on his skin, her Herbal Essences hair… He really needed to get out of that house and find a distraction.

As soon as he got dressed, he took off in his Durango to Brian’s house. Luckily, he was in his Orlando apartment, not in Atlanta. It was still a long drive, but it was a good place to go, and he needed Brian’s advice. He tried to avoid thinking about her.

At about the halfway point, he couldn’t help it anymore. His thoughts drifted to Michelle, and how beautiful she had looked in the candlelight. “Dammit!” he exclaimed. If he didn’t want a relationship with her like he said, then why couldn’t he get her off his mind? He turned the radio on and began singing along with the first song he knew, even though it was Britney Spears and he didn’t really like her. Luckily, it worked, and before he knew it, he was pulling up in front of Brian’s apartment.
