Chapter 16

“This is where we had our first date,” Beth stated, looking at what was before her. There was the ocean, obviously, but on the sand was a blanket with a candle-lit dinner waiting.

“I hope you don’t mind that I only made sub sandwiches. I didn’t wanna make something that we’d have to heat up or anything because I couldn’t imagine where we’d heat it up.”

She laughed. “I don’t care what you made for dinner, silly. How did you set all this up?”

“I begged Mom and BJ to do it for me.”

Tears sprang to her eyes, and he brushed one off her cheek. “Nick, this is the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me.” She leaned over and kissed him tenderly on the mouth.

He smiled. “Hey, we can’t have dessert before the main course. Eat your dinner first.”

Though it was only sub sandwiches, the meal was excellent, and Beth was incredibly touched. As she finished, she realized there was only one thing that was missing. “You know, in our nine months of dating, I have never once heard you sing.”

Confused, he looked up at her. “Sure you have. You’ve been to four or five of my concerts.”

“Yeah, but there are so many screaming fans there that it’s impossible to hear you.”

“Oh, come on, Lizzy. I can’t sing.”

She giggled. “Yes, you can. You do it for a living, you know.”

“Okay, so I can, but you’re gonna embarrass me. I’ll blush and get all teary-eyed and sentimental on you.”

“You think that’s a bad thing to me? I’m a girl! I love that sort of thing” He wasn’t convinced. Giving him the puppy dog expression always worked, though. “Please?”

“Okay, I guess,” he groaned. There was a long silence. “I don’t know what to sing.”

“Sing what’s in your heart, Nick.”

After thinking for a second, he cleared his throat. “Now’s your moment, floating in a blue lagoon, boy you better do it soon, no time would be better. She don’t say a word and she won’t say a word until you kiss the girl.” She didn’t miss the grin that was present on his lips or the tears that glistened in his eyes, and he leaned over and gave her the softest, gentlest, sweetest kiss imaginable. When they finally pulled apart, she leaned in close to his ear. “You’re perfect, you know that?”

“You bring out the best in me.”

“What makes you think that?”

“You’re the most wonderful person anyone could ever ask for, Lizzy. Don’t ever forget that. You’re beautiful, sweet, funny, romantic…everything. You’re everything.”

She looked down, feeling her cheeks getting hot. “You’re making me blush, Carter.”

“It’s true.”
