“She was in charge of costumes for one of our videos. We clicked right away during the filming and we went out that night, kinda like Brian and Leigh on the ‘As Long As You Love Me’ video,” Nick replied. “So what do you think of her?”
“She’s really nice,” Beth lied with a fake smile plastered across her face. Yeah, sure, she was nice, if you considered threatening and cussing out her fiancé’s ex as nice…
Nick put down his fork as he finished the last bite of his pasta. When he was done chewing, he replied. “I’m glad you like her. I really want you two to get along.”
“I’m sure we’ll be fine, Nick. All that really matters is that you’re happy, and I’m glad you are.” ‘I just wish you could be happy with someone who wasn’t a total bitch,’ she added mentally.
“Are you done?” he asked, motioning to her plate.
“Yeah, I’m full. You’re right, Nick. This is a really good restaurant. Why didn’t you ever take me here before?”
“Because Christina introduced me to it recently.”
Again, she had to bite back a rude comment, and she nodded politely. “Okay.”
“Ready to go, then?”
“Sure.”
He paid the bill and they walked out, arm in arm. “I missed you so much, Lizzy.”
“I missed you, too, Nick.”
“So you really do like Christina?”
“Of course I do!” Beth exclaimed with as much enthusiasm as she could muster.
“That’s good. She’s the first girl I’ve ever been really serious about, I mean, besides you, of course.” He paused. “Do you think we would have lasted?”
“Come on, don’t ask me that, Nick. It doesn’t matter now. You and I are long over, and you’re happy with Christina, and you’re gonna marry her, and…well, to be honest, I think it would be best if we could just forget you and I were ever together. We’re just friends now, and that’s all we’ll ever be.” Both of them detected the wistful tone in her voice, and both of them knew that she had to blink back a few tears, but both of them refrained from acknowledging either fact.
He sighed heavily as they pulled into the driveway. “You’re probably right. You are right. I’m sorry.”
“That’s okay.”
They walked into the house and Nick walked her up to her room. “You need some sleep. You’ve had a long day.”
“I think you’re right,” she yawned.
