Chapter 3

“Okay, my turn,” Nick stated. They had been going back and forth with questions for almost an hour since they had eaten dinner, just getting to know each other. “Hmm…what was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you?”

She smiled and shook her head. “How did I know this question was coming?”

“Since you made me admit that I’ve been rejected by a total of fifteen girls in my life.”

She smiled, recalling how she had almost asked why they would turn a guy like him down, but she had caught herself. “Okay, I guess I had it coming. My most embarrassing moment…let’s see…oh, I know. Well, I’m a bit of a klutz. I was at school one day, and I was walking to a class, but I was looking behind me and talking to a friend at the same time. I turned to go into my classroom, but I didn’t look to see if the door was open. Of course, with my luck, it wasn’t, and I turned my head just as someone did open it. The edge cracked me in the forehead and I had to go around with a huge purple lump down the middle of my forehead for the rest of the week.”

Nick couldn’t control his laughter. “That’s a pretty good one. Something I would do.” He paused. “You’re bright red.”

“I know I am! That’s because I’m embarrassed to tell you what an idiot I am!”

“You’re not an idiot. I do things like that all the time,” he assured her. “Okay, what’s your question?”

She paused for a minute, trying to think of a good one. “What do you want to do with your life?” He looked a bit surprised. Most of their questions so far had been shallow ones, simple ones, like the embarrassing story question. This was one of the first answers that actually made him think.

“Hmm…I want to do something to help people.”

“Which would be?”

He avoided her gaze. “Anything that inspires people and makes a difference in their lives. I’m not sure.”

“You look like you have something more to say on that question.”

“It’s not something I’m ready to share yet,” he said honestly. “I’ll tell you what. When you feel ready to tell me about your history with guys, I will tell you more about what I want to do. I don’t mean that it has to be soon, but I’m just letting you know.”

“Okay, sounds fair. Your turn.”

“What does your dream guy look like?”

She smiled. “He’s blond-haired and blue-eyed and tall and built,” she answered without hesitation.

“So he looks just like me, then.”

“Yep, he does.”

“So you think I’m your dream guy?”

“I didn’t say that. I just said he looks like you. My turn.” She thought for a second. “Who’s your dream girl?” She looked into his eyes. They seemed to burn into her mind, her heart, her soul.

“This is gonna sound crazy, but I think it’s you,” he whispered sincerely.
