Epilogue

“Danielle!” Beth called. “Come here, sweetie.”

The three-year-old blond-haired, blue-eyed girl ran across the yard back to her mother and jumped into her outstretched arms. “Yes, Mommy?”

“Your daddy’s home. It’s almost time for dinner, so go inside and get washed up,” she replied, kissing her on the forehead.

As her daughter ran to wash her hands, Beth stood at the kitchen counter finishing up the spaghetti. Nick came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, kissing her neck carefully.

“Uh-uh. Danielle will be in here in a few seconds,” she giggled.

“Remember when I told you you’d be a great mother?” Nick asked.

“Yeah.”

“I was right. God, you’re perfect. What can’t you do? You keep the house up, you cook, you clean, you take care of Danielle, you take care of me…” he trailed off. “I love you, babe.”

“I love you, too.”

Danielle came bouncing into the room. “What’s for dinner?”

“Spaghetti.”

“Ooh, pasketti! My favorite!” she exclaimed, sitting down at the table.

Beth laughed. “Just like her father.”

Nick raised his eyebrows and shrugged. “What can I say? She’s Daddy’s little girl.”

“Can you go set the table while I finish this up?” she asked.

“Absolutely.” He grabbed a stack of plates, silverware, and glasses and set three places.

Forty-five minutes later, they were finished with dinner. “I wanna watch a movie!” Danielle exclaimed.

“What movie, sweetie?” Beth replied.

“The Little Mermaid.”

The three curled up on the couch and started the movie. Just as hers and Nick’s song began to play, Beth looked down at her daughter to see she was fast asleep.

She and Nick shared a knowing glance as he gently pressed his lips against hers.
