Ally nervously twirled the phone wire around her finger as she waited for someone to pick up. Finally, the giggly girl that had been in the background last time answered, or at least, she assumed it was the same girl. “Uh, hi, is Craig there?” she asked.
“Who is this?” the girl grumbled.
“This is Alexandra Giovetti. It’s important that I speak to him,” she replied. Who was this girl anyway?
The girl hesitated, and finally agreed to put Craig on. “Just a minute.”
“Ally?” Craig greeted her. He sounded angry. “I thought you said we were over.”
“Trust me, I wouldn’t be calling you if I had the choice,” she snapped. “I’m pregnant.”
“And this involves me in what way?” Craig muttered. “If you want money, get it from that Backstreet Boy you’re banging.”
“Dammit, Craig, why does everything have to be about me sleeping with Nick? It didn’t happen! The only person I’ve ever slept with is you!” she exclaimed angrily.
“Okay, fine. Still, you can hit him up for some-“ Craig stopped when he realized what she had just said. “Wait a sec. Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”
“You’re the father,” Ally spat. “It’s your kid.”
“Wait, no way! There is no way that I am that kid’s father!” Craig shouted. “You’ve got something wrong, Ally. I always knew you were a slut anyway. It isn’t mine. It’s just some one night stand you won’t admit to or you were too drunk to remember or something.”
“Craig, I’m not you! I don’t sleep with new people all the time! I don’t just jump into this! And I don’t get drunk, either! I swear to you, Craig, it’s yours. Please believe me!” Ally pleaded. “What am I going to do with this kid?”
“I don’t know. You said we were over. Do whatever the hell you want.” There was a click, then a dial tone. That bastard hung up on her.
Nick looked up as his girlfriend came back into the room with her head hanging. “How’d it go?”
“He denied it was his, but Nick, it has to be! I’ve never gone that far with anyone else!” Ally sobbed.
Nick pulled her to his chest and kissed the top of her head while rubbing her back. “I know, sweetie. I know. What did he say to do with the baby?”
“He said to do whatever the hell I want. I don’t know, Nick. I don’t want to have an abortion, but it would be impossible for me to have this baby. It would ruin both Craig and me. I’m nineteen. I’m not ready to be a mother. We’re too busy to have a kid. The child would have a terrible life.”
“So are you going to have an abortion?” Nick asked.
“I can’t. I just…I don’t know. I have to think about it.” She paused. “Craig doesn’t even care. He doesn’t care what I do with his child.”
“He’s an asshole, Ally,” Nick assured her. “He doesn’t deserve to have a say in what happens with your baby anyway.”
“You still love me, right, Nick?” she whimpered.
He pulled her face close to his for a tender kiss. “Of course I still love you, Ally, and I want you to know that I promise to be supportive of whatever decision you make regarding this baby.”
“Thank you,” she whispered. She leaned back into his chest and closed her eyes. “I just don’t know what to do.”
“We’ll figure something out, babe.” It was very comforting to her that he used ‘we’ instead of ‘you.’
“You know, you are the most wonderful man I have ever met,” she said gratefully. “Thanks.”
“You’re the most wonderful woman I’ve ever met,” he replied. “And don’t thank me, Ally. It’s the least I can do for the woman I love.”
Ally was dragged from her peaceful slumber when a series of sharp pains shot through her stomach. She muffled a cry to avoid waking her boyfriend, but when the pain got worse, she had to do something. A bad feeling spread throughout her entire body. “Oh, shit, what’s going on?” she gasped frantically. “Nick, please wake up! Something’s not right.”
Nick’s eyes shot open immediately. “Ally, sweetie, what’s going on? Are you okay?”
“No, I’m not…the baby…something’s wrong with the baby. Get me to the hospital,” she groaned. “Please hurry!”
Panicking, he picked up the phone and called an ambulance. As soon as he hung up, he reached for her hand and squeezed it reassuringly. “Just hang on, baby. The ambulance will be here soon. Everything’s going to be all right. You’ll be fine.”
“Nick, what’s happening to me?” she whimpered softly. “Oh, God. Why do I hurt so bad?”
“I don’t know, Ally. Just hang on. It’ll be okay. I’m right here,” he assured her. “Where do you hurt?”
“My stomach. My stomach hurts,” she cried. He placed his other hand comfortingly on her abdomen as the realization suddenly hit her. “I’m going to lose this baby.”
He looked into her teary eyes as his heart split. “Oh, honey, what makes you think that?”
“This isn’t right. I’m only a month pregnant. I can’t be going into labor, and this hurts too bad to be any kind of sickness or normal cramps.”
He pressed his lips to her sweaty forehead. “You’ll be okay, sweetie. We’ll be okay.”
