“Nice try, Nick. It’s not Chris,” said Katelyn angrily. “And to be honest, I don’t think she needs to listen to you.”
“God, I know. I’m an asshole! I…I…what have I done?”
“I can answer that. It’s very simple. You made my best friend cry.”
“Kate, I didn’t mean to! It just slipped out! I was angry, confused, stressed-”
“Multiply each of those feelings by ten, and you’ll have some idea of how Chris feels. Is this how you treat someone? When she needs you, you call her a slut? That’s low.” Unable to stand Nick’s voice anymore, Katelyn hung up.
Nick shook his head and stood up. He was going to go get his girlfriend back, and he was going to do it now. He stepped out of his room and found the door to Christine’s unlocked, so he went in. “What the hell!” he shouted.
Christine looked up. “Shit!” She was shirtless, and she had been in the process of pulling off Brian’s shirt, so she quickly dropped it and let it fall back into place.
“Nick?” Brian exclaimed.
“Would someone like to explain to me what is going on?” he said, narrowing his eyes. “Why is my girlfriend making out with my best friend?”
Christine sighed and pulled her shirt back on. She didn’t want to get Brian in trouble. Maybe this revenge thing was a bad idea. Yes, it definitely was a bad idea. “I kissed him,” she whispered. Brian shot her a glance, but she ignored it. “This is my fault.”
“No-” Brian started.
Nick interrupted him. “So this is how you get revenge, Chris. That’s great. Brian, can I talk to my girlfriend alone for a few minutes?”
Immediately, Brian stood up and left the room. Christine started to explain. “First of all, you weren’t exactly treating me like your girlfriend this morning, so I don’t see how you get off calling me that. Brian came over here to see how I was doing, and I couldn’t resist-”
“Yeah, you obviously couldn’t resist it, Chris,” Nick muttered.
“God, Nick, will you let me finish? I kissed him, because I needed someone to love, and you were too busy calling me a slut and telling me that it was impossible not to sleep with me.” She paused, leaving Nick an opening.
“You know, I came over here to apologize for that and make up. I thought I was wrong in calling you that, but obviously I was right. You are a slut. You deserved everything you got from Jeff. It’s over, Chris.” With that, he left the room and slammed the door, leaving Christine sobbing into her pillow.
She didn’t know how long she had been crying-a minute, an hour, three hours- when the phone rang. “God, leave me alone!” Christine muttered. She didn’t answer it, thinking it was Nick, but the caller was persistent. Finally, she picked it up. “What do you want, Nick?”
“It’s not Nick. It’s me. Are you feeling any better?” It was only Katelyn.
“Nick and I are over. We’re completely over. When Bri-” She started to say something about what happened with Brian, but then she remembered that Katelyn was Brian’s girlfriend. God, I hurt my best friend in the process of getting my damn revenge! “I did something I really regret.”
“What?” Katelyn asked curiously.
I can’t tell her I tried to sleep with her boyfriend. “Brian came over to comfort me, and then he left, and AJ came in.” She covered her slip from before. “I kissed him, and before I knew it, we were on the bed. I had no shirt, and as I was taking off his, Nick walked in to apologize to me. AJ left and Nick said that he thought he was wrong about me being a slut, but he wasn’t. Then…he told me…I deserved everything Jeff did to me.”
Katelyn paused. “You know, that’s not what I heard happened.”
Christine’s eyes widened. “What did you say?”
“I talked to Nick, honey. He called me and told me exactly what you did. I know you’re lying.”
“Shit!”
“Yeah, that’s a pretty good word for it. I can’t believe my so-called best friend would do something like that to me! You tried to sleep with my boyfriend! I called to see if you would confess. There was no way I would have forgiven Brian, but I might have forgiven you. God, I’m disgusted with you. Nick’s right, you little slut.” With that, she hung up the phone.
Christine stood up. Things were going to be straightened out, once and for all. She was going to talk to Nick. She stormed out of her room and knocked on Nick’s door. After a moment, he opened it and tried to close it, but she stuck her foot in so he couldn’t. “We are going to talk, whether you like it or not.” She pushed her way inside and slammed the door behind her. Brian was not in the room, making things easier.
“I don’t see what there is to talk about. You tried to sleep with my best friend when you won’t even sleep with me…when you’re sober,” Nick muttered.
“Don’t you get it? I don’t care about Brian like that! I just wanted to get back at you for everything you said to me in the car!”
“So you basically used my best friend, then. That makes it all better, Chris,” Nick said sarcastically.
She was about to say that it was Brian who kissed her, but she didn’t need to change the story and get him into even more trouble. “You don’t understand. I’m in love with you, not Brian! I would do anything for you. I’ll have the baby and give it up for adoption if you want me to. I’ll even keep the baby! Just forgive me, please!”
“Chris, this isn’t about the baby anymore. I don’t care what you do with the baby. Get an abortion. This is about you and me. I don’t want you in my life after what you did.”
Tears were now streaming freely down Christine’s face. “If you ever loved me, you’d give me another chance.”
Nick looked away, knowing that, as mad as he was, he couldn’t lie to her. “Chris, I love you, but you obviously don’t love me back. You’re no better than Samantha was. Get out of my room.”
