“What’s wrong?” Elizabeth asked, stepping into the room. She looked at the TV and understood. “It’s been two months.”
“I know, but I still miss him. He was nice to talk to.” She turned off the television and grabbed a light jacket. “I’ll be back in a little while.”
“Where are you going?”
“To be honest, I’m not sure. I think I’m just gonna drive around for a while.”
“Be careful.”
“Don’t worry, I will.”
She grabbed her keys and took off in her Ford Escort, randomly turning at street corners. Hopefully, she’d be able to find her way back, but that wasn’t really on her mind at the moment. After about an hour, she pulled into a parking lot and got out of the car.
She walked along the beach as memories of Nick bombarded her. The time he came to introduce himself, the day he comforted her when she was crying, when Elizabeth told her who he was, the teddy bear, which she cuddled with every night, of course, him calling Brian to prove he was a Backstreet Boy, his soft lips… Suddenly, she fell to the ground in tears. Pulling her knees to her chest, she buried her face in her hands and sobbed.
