Heather lay her head in Nick’s lap, and he began playing with her hair. “I guess you were right, Nick.”
“About what?”
“About everything. First of all, it is definitely worth it to experience love, even if I do end up getting hurt-”
“Which I would never let happen if there were anything I could do to stop it,” he interrupted.
“Yes. Second, I guess I am an optimist deep down. I like it a lot better being an optimist.”
“What did I tell you? I’m a genius!”
“You’re also a dork,” she teased. “And last, you really are cute.”
“I know that,” he joked.
Her smile faded, and she got serious for a moment. “Thanks.”
“Don’t thank me, sweetie.”
“No, I have to thank you. If it weren’t for you, I never would have gotten myself back. God, I was so depressed, and you managed to come along and fix everything for me. You’re my angel.”
He smiled. “We’re meant to be together, you know. I think it was fate that we were both on that road that night. I think it was fate that made me visit you again and again. I think it was fate that made us run into each other on the beach that night.” A tear rolled down her cheek, but he kissed it, stopping its track.
“You’re right,” she agreed.
