She turned around to face him. “Did you forget something, Mr. Carter?” she asked.
“No, I didn’t. Actually, I was thinking I should apologize to the girl in the other car. Can you tell me her name and what room she’s in?”
“Her name is Heather Ashton. She’s in room 631. Knock before you go in. She might be asleep.”
He quickly found the room and knocked softly. “Come in.” Her voice sounded like music. He stepped in to see a very cute young girl who looked closer to fourteen than to eighteen. She had very light brown, almost blonde, curly hair framing a tan face and very dark brown eyes. He offered her a slight smile, which she returned, but she didn’t recognize him. “Yes?”
“Um, hi. My name is Nick Carter,” he said. She showed no sign of recognition. “I was in the other car.”
Her smile immediately faded to a glare. “What do you want?”
He ignored her hostility. “I just wanted to say that I’m very sorry, and I would do anything to take it back.”
“You can’t. There’s nothing you can do now,” she said coldly. “So you may as well just leave, Mr. Carter.”
“I understand how mad you are at me, and I honestly don’t blame you, but I thought I owed you at least a visit and an apology,” he said uncomfortably. “I’m sorry.” With that, he turned and left the room.
As he walked back to the elevator, Nick was puzzled. For some reason, seeing Heather like that really bothered him. Maybe it was the fact that he was the cause of her pain, or maybe it was the fact that she looked so sweet and innocent. Whatever it was, he felt a sudden determination to make it up to her, and he would keep trying until she left the hospital. He would go back to visit again tomorrow.
