“I wouldn’t exactly call us friends. Until yesterday, I totally hated the guy.” After a few seconds of silence, a grin broke out on her face. “He is cute, though, isn’t he? How old is he?”
“He’s twenty-two. You should go for him! You’re legal!” Elizabeth suggested. “He obviously cares about you, or else he wouldn’t be back to visit every day. He’s cute, nice, probably romantic…you two would be so cute together!”
“He would never go for me. He thinks I’m too cynical, too pessimistic, although he did tell me today he bets there’s an optimist in me somewhere.”
“I have to agree with him on that level. The Heather you were was optimistic and fun-loving and carefree. I think she’s hiding somewhere in you and you just need to search for her. Then you can date Nick and live happily ever after.”
“No, I wouldn’t wanna date him.”
“Why not?”
“I could easily see myself getting too close and too attached, and I don’t wanna put myself in that situation. I’m bound to get hurt.”
“Heather, you have to take a chance! You’re never going to be happy if you keep that attitude.”
“I’d rather not get hurt again.”
“Maybe Nick was wrong about the whole optimism thing,” Elizabeth grumbled before changing the subject.
