“What?” said the guy next to her. It was a very familiar voice, but she was too groggy to even try to place it.
“Please don’t yell,” she whispered.
“I wasn’t yelling, Andrea. I was talking in a normal tone,” he replied. “Were you drinking last night?”
“Wait a second, I’m not Andrea,” she said, still not realizing who it was. She looked down at the face of the figure next to her just in time to see his blue eyes snap open in alarm.
“You’re not?”
“Nick?” she shrieked without thinking. Her hands immediately shot up to rub her now even more throbbing temples. “Oh, ow, shit, this is the hangover to end all hangovers. I’m never getting drunk again. What the hell am I doing in bed with you?”
“Man, what did we do last night?”
She looked down to realize her bare chest was uncovered and quickly lay back down, pulling the sheets over her. “I don’t know. What did I have to drink last night?”
“Probably the same thing I had. Shit, Andrea’s gonna kill me!” He paused. “How the hell did this happen?”
“You say it like I might remember something from last night. I can’t believe it. I cheated on my boyfriend, and I don’t even remember doing it” she stated.
He paused. “No, you didn’t. You were drunk.”
“You’re only saying that because if I did, then so did you. Give me a break, Nick. You know we both cheated,” she said.
“It’s not like we had any idea of what we were doing,” he rationalized. “It was an accident.” He rolled out of bed and quickly pulled on his clothes, which had been left in a trail from the door that didn’t even reach the bed. “We were a bit eager last night, it seems.”
“What?”
“We couldn’t even wait to get into bed. Man, your shirt and bra are right here,” he stated, holding them up from over by the door. He took a few steps closer. “And here are your pants.” Two more steps, but still only halfway from the door to the bed. “And your panties. My clothes are spread out like that, too. We couldn’t wait.”
“I cheated on my boyfriend. I can’t believe I did that.”
“Look, Liz, let’s just forget it. It never happened. We’re friends, and that’s all we’ll ever be. Agreed?”
She took a deep breath. “Agreed, definitely.”
With that, he left her in her room, confused. Why did she feel worse when he said they could only be friends than when she realized she had cheated on Joel?
