Chapter 16

Liz threw all her clothes into her suitcase. This whole thing wasn’t gonna work out. She didn’t care if she would get fired; she couldn’t be around Nick anymore. She was going to get another reporter to finish up and then go home and explain everything to Joel. Hopefully he would understand.

Before she left, she might wanna call her editor, she realized. She picked up the phone and anxiously began dialing the number, but the door to her room opened to reveal Nick. Damn, she should have locked it.

“What are you doing?” Nick asked.

“Nice of you to knock before coming in,” she muttered.

“What are you doing?” he repeated.

She hung up. “I was going to call my editor and let him know I quit this assignment.”

“What?”

“I can’t be around you.”

“Why not?”

She laughed. “Why not? Because you got me pregnant and then chose your bitchy pregnant girlfriend instead of me.”

“What if I told you I broke up with the bitch?”

“What?”

“She lied to me. She isn’t pregnant. I overheard her talking on the phone with her friend.”

“But if she had been pregnant, you would have stayed with her, then, right?”

“Probably not for long. If either one of you were pregnant, I’d be with whichever one was pregnant, but if you were both pregnant and I had to choose, I would much rather be with you.” He stroked her cheek affectionately, but she pulled away.

“How do I know you’re not just doing this because you knocked me up?”

“Look at my eyes, Liz. Do they look like I don’t love you?”

She couldn’t do it. “I’m happy with Joel, Nick. Please just leave me be,” she pleaded.

“Wait, I’m not getting this. If you’re happy with Joel, how could you kiss another guy?”

“I don’t know, but I’m happy with Joel,” she said softly.

“How can you be happy with Joel? I don’t get it!” he shouted. “One second you’re kissing me and saying something is there, and the next you’re saying you don’t wanna be with me.”

“Don’t do this to me!”

“It seems to me you’re the only one doing something wrong here!” he exclaimed.

Suddenly, she grabbed her stomach. “Oh, God, something’s not right,” she whispered.

“What?”

“The baby, something’s wrong…”

“Oh, shit.” He picked up the phone and called 911. “Hang on, Liz. The ambulance will be here soon.”
