“Hi,” he replied, not even looking at her.
“Are you Liz’s boyfriend?”
“Yeah, that’s me.”
“I need to tell you something,” she stated. “I know it’s really not my place, and I would hate to see you two break up, but I feel it’s my duty.”
“What?” he asked, confused. He finally looked at her, but he didn’t start drooling or anything like she had expected. It was more a ‘what are you talking about, psycho?’ look.
She was tempted to not tell him because he obviously didn’t seem to appreciate her, but she had to get Liz back. “The baby she lost…it’s not yours.”
“How would you know?”
“Because it was my ex-boyfriend’s. They both cheated on us.”
“How do you know it was his?”
“Because he told me.” She paused. “You have to believe me. Don’t you think she would have noticed earlier if she had gotten pregnant before the tour, more than two and half months ago? She and Nick slept together last month. That’s why he and I broke up.”
“She wouldn’t cheat on me.”
“Look, if you don’t believe me, call the doctor and ask who the father was, and if they won’t tell you that, ask how far along she was.”
“I guess that wouldn’t hurt,” he said. “Thank you…I didn’t catch your name.”
“Andrea.”
“Thank you, Andrea.”
“You’re welcome.”
The hospital wasn’t far away. Surely the doctor wouldn’t tell him such things over the phone. In a few minutes, he was in a taxi on the way to find out what was going on.
Soon, he pulled up in front of the hospital and raced up the stairs to find Dr. Hasken, the one that had taken care of Liz. It didn’t take much work. She was at the nurse’s station, talking with a young nurse.
“Hello, Dr. Hasken,” he said.
“Hello, Joel, right?”
“Yes.”
“I was wondering if you could tell me something about Liz O’Leary,” he requested.
“I think so.”
“Could you tell me who the father of her baby was?”
“Of course. She told me it was you,” Dr. Hasken said, confused.
“How far was she along?”
The petite woman grabbed a folder off the table next to the nurse and looked through the papers. “About a month.”
He sighed. “Okay, that’s what I thought. Thank you, doctor.” With that, he left and got another taxi. He and Liz were going to have to have a little talk when he got back.
