“May I speak to Madeleine Littrell, please?” said a professional voice on the other end.
‘This must be the doctor she went to,’ Nick thought. He had called her on the way home, and she had said something about a doctor needing to call her with the results. “Sure, just a second.” He stepped into the living room where Madeleine was staring blankly at the television. She was obviously trying to distract herself and make the wait seem shorter. “Mattie, the doctor is on the phone.”
She took it from him anxiously. “Yes, this is Madeleine.”
Nick couldn’t hear what the doctor was saying, but he could tell by the way her face fell what the results were. She was pregnant. He comfortingly wrapped an arm around her shoulder and led her back to the couch.
“Yes, thank you, Doctor,” she finished, hanging up. Unable to hold in her sobs anymore, she fell into Nick’s arms. “I had this insane thought that maybe I was wrong, Nick, but I wasn’t. I can’t believe we let this happen. Everyone is gonna hate us.”
“No, they won’t,” he whispered, stroking her hair. “It’s gonna be okay. You’ll go with Leigh and get it taken care of, and no one has to know.”
“Promise? You aren’t gonna tell any of the guys?”
“Not unless you want me to, which you obviously don’t, so I won’t tell anyone,” he replied.
“Okay, good. I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
