Chapter 43

Later that week, Madeleine wandered aimlessly through the mall. She had needed to get out, seeing as she had barely left the house, besides for when she was with Leighanne. Eventually, she found herself browsing the shelves in the bookstore. After looking at the magazines, she went into the classic book section and reached for Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. She had always heard it was a great book, but never actually read it. “That’s a really good book,” a male voice behind her stated. ‘That’s impressive. A guy who has actually read a novel called Little Women,’ she thought before responding.

“Thanks, so I’ve heard,” she replied, not looking up to see his face. Deciding to buy it, she turned around to stare into a pair of the greenest eyes she’d ever seen. She couldn’t help but be reminded of when she’d met Nick, how she got lost in his eyes that first time, but she quickly erased that thought. Things with Nick were long gone. Finally, she managed to tear her eyes away from the ones before her, and she studied the rest of the guy. He was tall, with spiky brown hair and tan skin, and my God, was he built! He was, without a doubt, one of the most attractive men she had ever seen close up.

“Hey. My name is Brad,” he said, holding out his hand. She shook it.

“I…I’m Mattie,” she replied, finding her voice.

“It’s nice to meet you, Mattie. Say, would you like to go get something to eat? There’s an Applebee’s right next to the mall,” he suggested.

She grinned. “I would love to.”
