Chapter 48

The next morning, Brad gently shook Madeleine awake. “Leighanne is calling you, sweetheart,” he whispered as her eyes fluttered open.

“Mmm…I’m tired…I don’t wanna get up,” she answered.

She closed her eyes and tried to go back to sleep, but her boyfriend wouldn’t let her. “Madeleine Littrell, get your ass out of bed right now. You’re being summoned.”

“Fine,” she grumbled. She rolled out of bed and dared to peek in the mirror before going downstairs. Her hair was disheveled, her eyes were sleep-swollen, and there were bluish purple marks under them from lack of sleep. After running a brush through her hair, she found her best friend in the kitchen, along with Nick. For some reason, she felt embarrassed to have him see her when she looked so bad, but she quickly shook the thought from her head. He was her EX, and nothing more.

“Good morning, sunshine. It’s only ten o’clock, early for you,” Leighanne teased.

“Yeah, my boyfriend made me get up. I wanted to sleep some more because, well, as Nick knows, I didn’t sleep well last night.”

“Well, I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but we have a lot of work to do. You have to come with me to visit places for the reception today.”

“Oh, okay. Let me take a shower and get dressed and then I’ll be happy to join you.”

Leighanne nodded. “I’m gonna go upstairs and make sure Brian is up. He’s supposed to be fitted for his tux today.” With that, she left Nick and Madeleine alone in the room together.

He looked around to make sure no one was around. “Listen, Mattie, about last night-”

She interrupted him. “It never happened, Nick. I was tired and not thinking straight. I’m in love with Brad. Things with you and me are over.” She turned around and followed Leighanne upstairs.
