Part One - Lost

~ For Bec ~

Becca threw things around her desk in a frenzied search. "Shit…" she mumbled to herself as the fact that the item she was looking for wasn’t in her office began to set in. "Come on…" she pleaded to the papers on the desk, "Be here… be here… please be here…" After searching for a while longer, flipping through the in and out trays on her desk she plopped down with an exasperated sigh in the chair behind her desk and dropped her head to the surface. "I’m going to lose my job… ‘We’re sorry Becca, but get the hell out…’"

A knock on her office door made her lift her head up with a weak smile, "Hey Becca…" her co-worker Sarah said with a chuckle. "You okay? Or just napping on the job again…"

"Bite me Sarah…" Becca groaned then smiled. "I just lost something, that’s all." Yeah, a something that could ruin her chances of ever moving up in the company if it fell into the wrong hands.

"Anything I can help with?" Sarah smiled as she leaned against the doorframe.

"No… Thank you though."

"Okay…" Sarah shrugged. "Well we’ve got a meeting with the guys in ten… don’t forget your ideas for Release Week. Apparently they actually want to know how we plan on promoting their new CD before it happens…" Sarah laughed at her own comment and wrinkled her nose, "Go figure huh?"

"Yeah…" Becca said with a nod, her mind still focused on her lost item and the future of her job. "Okay, I’ll be there… thanks kiddo…"

"No prob… Later…" Sarah walked off in her usual chipper mood and Becca grabbed her telephone in a final attempt to save her job.

The phone rang three times before an out of breath voice answered, "Huh?"

Becca smiled and shook her head, "I swear you answer the phone in the weirdest ways sometimes… what were you doing?"

"Oh shut up…" Kel, Becca’s roommate laughed into the phone. "I knew it was you because I saw the Caller ID. But I was just getting out of the shower and I’m dripping wet. Plus I tripped over the damn cat and nearly broke my neck when I slipped on a sock…"

"You’re hopeless, you know this?"

"Yeah I do… now what the hell do you want?" Kel laughed.

Becca sighed and leaned her head in her hands as she talked, "Tell me you took that little, uh… story from yesterday."

"The one where Nick and Kevin fucked each other?" Kel laughed.

Becca rolled her eyes and groaned, "Yeah… what did you do with it after you read it?"

"I put it back on your desk… then we went to dinner."

"You sure? You didn’t accidentally put it in your bag or something?"

"I’m sure… I hardly have to steal your smut Bec…" Kel giggled.

"It’s gone Kel…"

"What do you mean it’s gone?"

"I mean it’s gone… Like, not in my office at all anymore. Someone found it or something because it’s gone. I’ve searched my office at least ten times and it’s not here. I meant to take it home with me last night when you picked me up, but I didn’t. I got home and realized I’d left it here. But it’s gone…"

"Shit…" Kel sighed.

"Yeah…"

"You’re sure you didn’t bring it home?"

"Yuh huh…"

"Who could have taken it?"

"I have no idea…" Becca shrugged despite the fact that Kel couldn’t see her through the phone.

"God Bec…" Kel said with a groan. "I mean… if that gets in the wrong hands…"

"I’m updating my resume tonight when I get home from work…"Becca sighed. "Say goodbye to my dream job…"

"Honey," Kel said in her best motherly tone. "Maybe some horny kid on the cleaning crew took it. It’s not like your name was on it. So they can’t really prove that you wrote it. That’s gotta be who did it. I mean, why would anyone else be in your office without you there?"

"Maybe…" Becca said quietly. "I’ve gotta go… the guys are going to be here in a few minutes for a meeting about Release Week…"

"I’ll do a check in my bag just in case and if I find it I’ll two-way you okay?"

"Yeah… thanks Kel…" Becca said, her voice not at all full of it’s normal spark.

"Hang in there okay? I’ll call you on my break this afternoon and you can vent to me…"

"Okay… later Kel…"

"Later B…"

Minutes later, after Becca had pulled her things and herself back together she walked to the conference room where she’d be faced with several people who she didn’t exactly want to see. See, Becca was a writer by nature. She would sit down at a computer or with a pen in hand and beautiful words would spill onto the page effortlessly. Even though in her "real job" with the ad firm she only wrote small press releases and other items, which promoted the events and accomplishments of their clients, at home she wrote for fun.

It was that fun which had turned out to be the cause of her frustration that morning in the office. Becca’s firm had been chosen a few months prior to work hand in hand with the Backstreet Boys. They were to "drum up as much good press for the new CD as possible, and help make it a hit before any kids even get the thing in their hot little hands." Things were going great to say the least. With Becca working on the print work, Stef working on the web side of things, Sarah doing all sorts of photo work, and assorted others doing their best for the five men, it looked like they surely were going to meet the requests of the group.

But, being the writer that she was, Becca couldn’t help but write about the men who she had the pleasure of working with on a weekly basis during their project. Taking an immediate liking to the two tallest members of the Backstreet Boys, Becca developed somewhat of a crush on Kevin and Nick, and before long she began writing about them. At first it started out harmless. Simple short stories about the guys doing something or another, just your basic fiction.

Then one afternoon as Becca sat with the two men in her office as she did an interview with them that would show up in assorted newspapers, magazines and press releases, her creative juices, so to speak, began to flow. A simple glance here, a smile there, and the way they related to one another… Becca began to wonder if there was more to Kevin and Nick’s relationship than most people knew of.

Even if they weren’t sneaking around with one another, she had no way of knowing for sure anyway, the seed had been planted in her head. And in her head, they were no longer just friends and co-workers, they were lovers. A few pages of fiction later Becca had herself a short love story, its only characters Kevin and Nick, and the sex, highly graphic.

It was that story, which she showed to Kel the night before when she’d shown up to pick Becca up for dinner. It was that story that was now missing from her office. And it was Kevin and Nick, among others, who she was about to face in a meeting, trying to figure out who in the world had stolen the story from her desk.
