Chapter Four

(Britt’s Point of View)

“Ten, nine, eight, seven, six…” I said aloud, and typing through to Lauren on America Online’s Instant Messenger.

L E 725: They aren’t going to call exactly at 4:30, Britt.

BrittLeigh02: They just might. You never know.

L E 725: Well, give them some time. Don’t work yourself into a tizzy if they don’t call in the first five minutes.

BrittLeigh02: I’m not going to, but I just want to know.

L E 725: You made it, don’t worry about it!

BrittLeigh02: I hope so.

L E 725: Britt, I know so. Hold on, my phone’s ringing!

I sighed and went to get a drink of water from the bathroom. No problem, I told the face in the mirror. It’s only 4:43. They’ll call me in a couple of minutes. I heard the instant message noise, and I retreated back to the computer.

L E 725: That was Fatima! I made it!

BrittLeigh02: Awesome! Now we have to wait for them to call me.

If I did, I would be waiting a long time.

(Lauren’s Point of View)

I sighed. I didn’t know how to tell Brittany. Fatima told me on the phone that another girl had made the tour. Taylor Young, or something. It didn’t matter, though. Britt would be crushed.

L E 725: Well, Fatima told me something.

BrittLeigh02: What, did she tell you when we start?

I cringed.

L E 725: No, she told me who the other girl is…her name is Taylor Young.

Brittany signed off of AIM without another word. This had to be absolutely killing her. I know she has a crush on Nick, and for her to know that she can’t be with him for this tour, it’s got to be making her sick to her stomach.

I raced downstairs to get the cordless phone. I dialed her number. One, two, three rings. Finally, she picked up.

“I don’t want to hear it Lauren,” she answered.

“Britt, give me a minute here. You were obviously first or second choice –“

“Obviously not anymore.”

“ – but Taylor Young, her last name begins with a Y, was one of the last ones to audition and probably blew their socks off.”

“Thanks Lauren. That helps, a lot.”

“Brittany, I’m just trying to explain to you how this happened!”

“Lauren, I know how this happened! I suck as a dancer, so they didn’t accept me!”

“Brittany, you know darn well that you’re an awesome dancer. Someone was just a little bit better, that’s all.”

Brittany sighed, and I could hear her starting to cry. “But Lauren, what about Nick?”

I sighed, too, and I slid down the wall and sat down, the phone cradled between my ear and my shoulder. “I don’t know, Brittany. Maybe he just isn’t the right one for you.”

“But I want him to be! He was so nice, and helpful, and gorgeous…”

“He’s still single. Who says you can’t have him?”

“I don’t know…” Britt trailed off.

“Don’t give up on him just because you haven’t made the tour.”

“I guess. He’s supposed to call a little after five, so I’ll let you go. What time is rehearsal for you tomorrow?”

“Eight-thirty. At night.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

“Weird. Well, I’ll talk to you later. And Lauren?”

“Yeah?”

”Thanks.”

I smiled. “You’re welcome. G’night.”

“Night.”

(Brittany’s Point of View)

RING! RING! RING!

“Hello?” I answered, knowing darn well who it is.

“Hey sexy.” My stomach jumped about fourteen times.

“Hey Nick,” I calmly replied, “how are you?”

“Fine, how about yourself?”

I sighed and sat down at the kitchen table. “I could be better, I guess.”

“You didn’t make it, did you?”

I shook my head, even though Nick couldn’t see me. “Nope.”

“I still want to go out with you tonight.”

I squealed. “You do?”

“Of course I do! I have to see you before I leave.”

Lauren was right, I said to myself. “Great. What do you want to do?”

“How about we just chill at Applebee’s?”

“Sounds good. I’ll meet you at the one in Apollo Beach, nine-thirty or so?”

“Great. Bye babe.”

I smiled. “Bye Nick.”

Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.
