Chapter 22

Claire woke up from her alarm at 6:45am. She stretched before getting up and plodding into the shower. She was washing her hair when a smile spread across her face from the remembrance of last night's conversation with Nick.

He told her he loved her ... and she didn't say it back. Claire's stomach did a flip but she just ignored the guilty feeling, and she finished in the shower.

Claire got out of the shower and fed Madeline, before going to get ready for her first day at the law office. She dried her hair and pulled it back into a french twist. She then changed into a long summer dress with a white sweater over it.

After she was ready, she took off to go to work. At 7:50am, ten minutes early, Claire reached the Law Office of Tom Blakeman. She tried to wipe the goofy smile off of her face but she couldn't. She was just too excited and proud about the job.

She went inside and said hello to Rosie who was seated behind the desk. Claire took her position next to Rosie and put the hands-less phone on, before turning on the computer she needed to use for the job.

"Good Morning Claire, how are you?" she asked.

"Oh, I am great Rosie, how are you?" Claire asked.

Rosie smiled, "Good, good."

"Are you nervous?" Rosie asked with a curious face.

"A little, I just hope I can do well." she admitted.

Rose smiled kindly, "You'll do find deary."

Just then Claire's phone rang and she pressed the button on the side of the headphones, to answer the call.

"Law Office of Tom Blakeman, how may I help you?" she asked.

"Yes, my name is Mary and I would like to make an appointment to see the lawyer. I need it for today in the afternoon." the lady said.

Claire typed in the information into the calendar on the computer, "Is today at 12:15 okay for you?"

"Yes, that is great, thank you." the woman said.

Claire got the rest of the information she needed before saying thank you and hanging up. Rosie grinned at her and Claire couldn't help but smile.

"Done like a pro!" Rosie smiled.

The day went on, appointments were made, phone calls were taken and files were typed. Claire was loving every minute of the day.

At 12:00, Claire got her hour lunch break. She walked around the law office for a while, just seeing the entire place. After that, she went out and got two chef salads to go at a local sandwich and salad shop. She took it back to the office and handed one to Rosie.

"Oh sweetie, that was so nice of you. I love these." Rosie said in a delighted tone.

"Oh, your welcome. You've been so kind to me so I figured it's the least I can do." she said.

Rosie smiled before taking a bite of her salad. Claire looked at the clock and she still had 25 minutes till her break was over.

An hour later, at 1:35 Claire stretched and yawned a little.

"Aww, first day wear you out?" Rosie asked.

Claire nodded a little before yawning again. She laughed and Rosie smiled at her.

"First days always wear me out too. Don't worry, you'll get more use to it. Do you work 7am to 3pm today?" Rosie asked

Claire nodded before answering the call she just received.

"Law Office of Tom Blakeman, how may I help you?" Claire asked.

"Hi I would like to make an appointment with lawyer Jim Kelley." a voice said over the phone.

Claire adjusted the headphones and tried to keep a look of what-the-heck off her face.

"I'm sorry sir, the only lawyer at this office is Tom Blakeman. I can look up that lawyer if you'd like." she said.

"No, I want an appointment with Jim and I want it now." the man said.

Claire licked her lips, "Well I am sorry there-"

"Get me my appointment now!" the man said before breaking into a laugh.

Claire listened to the man's laugh and realized who it was, "Nick?!"

"I'm sorry baby, I couldn't resist. You know, having a difficult client on the first day was too priceless not to act out ..." he laughed.

"Oh yeah, it was funny." she said dully.

"So what's up?" he asked.

Claire tried not to blow up at him about the importance of this job to her and how he can't be prank calling her.

"Nick, I can't talk. This is my first day here, and real clients could be trying to call." she said.

"I miss you, can't take ten minutes out of your time to talk to me?" he said.

"No, I have to go." Claire said hoping Rosie didn't notice her conversation.

"Fine, fine. I know that job is important to you, but you need to loosen up. It's not like they are going to fire you for having a five minute conversation." he said with an edge to his voice.

Claire sighed, "Nick, no offense, but you have never had a job-"

"What? My life is my job Claire. How can you say I have never had a job?" he asked.

"I didn't say that! If you had let me finish my sentence, I was trying to say that you have never had a job like this. My god Nick, what is your problem? I am trying to do good at something and you flip out at me because my mind is on something other than you!" Claire said defensively.

Claire heard a click and then a dial tone. Nick had hung up on her ...
