Chapter One

“Hey Anna?”
“Yeah?”
“Can you meet me at the mall in ten minutes?”
“Sure, you sound worried, is everything okay?”
“We’ll talk there, just be there all right?”
I showed up early so I grabbed a Chick-Fil-A table and sat down. After running my speech through my head for the 5000th time, Anna finally walked in.
“Hey Lara! What’s up?”
“Look, we need to talk.”
“Sure thing. What about?”
“I’m really worried about your mom,” I finally choked out.
Anna’s face fell...”Oh, I know.”
“She needs help. And there’s a great rehab center like 15 minutes away that we could get her into. I read about their AA meethings. They’re supposed to be really helpful and...”
“She’s fine, okay!” Anna snapped.
“No she’s not! When she passed out on the doorstep while I was sleeping over, I knew her drinking problem had to be stopped so what do you wanna do about it? Just sit back and watch her slowly deteriorate to nothing?”
“Of course now. But first she has to want help.”
“Well, when can we talk to her?”
“How about now? She’s home.” Anna said as she grabbed her keys.
“Okay, I’ll follow you there in my car.”
“All right.”
I snatched the keys to my mom’s forest green can and jumped out of my seat. I ran to my car, got in, and slammed the door. Anna pulled up in front of me and we roared off.
