“Tell you what?” Jessie asked.
“Tell me what you are going to do about Nick.” I answered.
“I told you yesterday that I don’t know yet.” She replied, then she acquired another sly grin on her face.
“Yes you do! You just grinned!” I said.
“Oh wow! I grinned. I’ve never done that before.” Jessie quipped.
“You always grin when you lie.” I told her.
“Um, no.” she said.
“Um, yea. I’ve unfortunately known you since you were 1?. I think I can tell when you are lying by now.” I retorted.
“Okay fine. I do have an idea, but I’m not totally set on doing it, so I won’t tell you just yet.” She said.
“You and Nick will sure be a great couple. You guys have something in common.” I said.
“Yes, I know. But why do you say that?” Jessie asked.
“Because neither of you tell me your plans.” I whined.
“I’m sorry. But it makes you feel any better, I’m not telling anybody. Cause I don’t wanna ruin the surprise.” She said.
“Its okay.” I replied.
Suddenly pain shot through my leg. I’d fallen during a jump. ‘I musta landed wrong.’ I thought. I tried to get up and winced. ‘Shit.’ I thought. I searched frantically with my eyes to get someone’s attention so they could help me. Nobody. ‘Couldn’t this happen in rehearsal?’ I asked myself. Luckily this was one of the last songs. Kevin glanced over to me.
“Help.” I mouthed.
He slowly made his way over. He moved the mic away from his mouth. “Can you stand up?” he asked.
I shook my head.
He picked me up and carried me offstage. Kevin helped me onto one of the couches in the dressing room. “Be back in a few.” He said and left.
When the concert was over, everyone rushed to my side.
“What happened?” Brian asked.
“I don’t know. I was doing one of the jumps and the next thing I knew, I was on the ground and couldn’t stand up.” I told him.
Just then Jessie appeared. “Rach, are you okay?” She asked.
“My ankle hurts.” I said quietly.
“We should get you to a doctor.” Jessie said. She grabbed her car keys. “I’ll take you. Someone help me get her to my car.” Jessie said.
AJ stepped forward and gently picked me up. “Does it hurt a lot?” he asked.
“Yea.” I whispered.
“Aww. Poor Rach.” He said.
I put my head against his shoulder. When we got outside, AJ laid me down in the backseat of Jessie's Pathfinder.
“Why don’t you go to the hotel and get some sleep. You look tired.” He said to Jessie.
“I couldn’t just leave Rachel.” She said.
“Jess, I’ll be fine. AJ will be with me.” I reassured her.
“That’s what I’m afraid of.” Jessie said with a smile.
“Heh, funny.” AJ said.
“Alright. But don’t get into an accident with me car. And don’t take too long.” She said and gave AJ her keys.
AJ got into the car and turned on the radio. ‘Faded’ by SoulDecision was on.
“Do you think you need to go to the hospital?” he asked.
“No! Please don’t take me there.” I begged.
Hospitals were just too depressing for me. We pulled into the doctors office.
“Damn. It’s closed. Looks like we have to go to the hospital now.” He said and drove a little bit longer. “I just hope nobody recognizes us.” He said and carried me through the hospital doors.
